The program begins with Ward Allen's little known sequel to his fiddle hit Maple Sugar: Back To The Sugar Camp. (To hear Ward playing out his tune, just click on the photo at the top of the page to get it in RA). When you're in a cabin in the woods there is nothing quite like a great fiddle tune get your spirits up. And then things start happening.
The
show is heavy on music - a mosaic of CanCon that goes backwards, forwards,
left and right of the eye of the storm. Just think: if you were living
in a cabin in the woods with a CD player and a couple of turntables connected
to a 12 volt battery, what would you play? Well I know what I'd play and
so can you by tuning in to 89.5 FM. Or catch the program on Star Choice
or the internet in Real Audio.
If you would like to have your music considered for broadcast, please send a CD to the address below**. If the music appeals to me I'll probably play it, so folk, blues, jazz, country, celtic, instrumental and singer/songwriting and other genres (sans pop or Billboard charted 'hits') will be considered.
Music that is not Canadian in content might also get aired from time to time, but the chances are not in your favour. Why not email first and ask before sending a CD?
(**You should also send a play copy to CIUT Radio so that other programmers can have a chance to play your music)
Another thing of importance: the Sugar Camp only airs once a week for just an hour. This is not a hit's oriented program so airplay of any particular album or CD will get only limited exposure. I try to air them in a timely manner but you must realize that any CD sent to the Sugar Camp may only get one track of airplay and not be heard again for months. There's just too much stuff coming in all the time that begs a listen as well as the mountains of vinyl building up in the shed; special topics and other specials also require careful examination. So you can bet not getting overplayed on this program.
Playlists will appear on the Sugar Camp web site as well as being emailed to subscribers of Folkdj, Maplepost. They are also sent out to Sugar Camp playlist subscribers (138 and counting) so all in all, well over a thousand places.
Check out the playlists and see if they configure to your music.
You might
want to catch the programs that sandwich the Sugar Camp: Sugarfoot Stomp
with Colin Bray (classic jazz from the 20's and 30s) and Atlantic Ceilidh
with Pat Simmonds. CIUT broadcasts on 89.5 FM from the University of Toronto
with an approximate range of 100 kms with 15,000 watts of power. Also heard
in Real Audio and on Star Choice satellite communications.
