Guelph, a city founded by a poet, John Galt on Indian land along the Speed and Eramosa rivers, an hour away from downtown Toronto, has become a haven for musicians and artisans. Along with a corrections institute (a.k.a. jail), the city is also known for its agricultural college. Like Joliette, Quebec, also an hour from downtown Montreal, which has become a hotbed of musical maniacs. Musicians find cheaper rents, housing prices, places to park their cars without them being towed or broken into, more space closer to the countryside, and a creative atmosphere which bridges more than rivers. James Gordon has been living in Guelph for decades after being brought into this world in Scarborough (now Toronto), Ontario, (which he still laments to this day). He has just released an entire CD of music that depicts the history of Guelph by digging into old poems, sheet music and museum documents. The CD also features children's choirs, old men, known artists, unknown artists, and himself.
Guelph is also the home of the very successful Hillside Festival which, if you look at the map, takes place just north of the city in the Conservation Area marked with the big C near the 124. It is home to the Sleeman and Wellington Country breweries. So tonight we take a page out of Shakespeare and perform Guelph Night.

Guests: Ned Landry & Ivan Hicks
Telephone Conference call from New Brunswick
Ned Landry is one of the fathers of the Canadian fiddle. 3 Time Shelburne Fiddle Champion (1956 , 57 & 62), he began playing harmonica in the vaudeville shows when he was 7 in 1928. He joined Don Messer's Backwoods Trio on radio shortly after that and became a full fledged member of Messer's New Brunswick Lumberjacks as second violinist. Now, at 81, he's still in command of the fiddle strings.
Ivan Hicks grew up playing old time music with his dad, Curtis. Born in 1940 - a generation after Ned - he grew up listening to recordings by Don Messer and Ned Landry, amongst others. In the mid-1950s he joined the Golden Valley Boys with his friend, Del Wheaton. He and Del still perform together in the Maritime Express. Ivan is a fiddle teacher, helps run the Sussex Avenue Fiddlers, and tireless exponent of old time fiddling. It was his dream to team up with Ned Landry and in doing so included his own students from the Moncton area.
But first we go farther than down east. Far, far east:

John Borra has been playing on the Toronto music scene since the early 1980s. His first major band was A Neon Rose which used to hang around the Beverley Tavern on Queen Street for Elvis Mondays. While his roots were in the punk rock scene, playing bass with bands like Change of Heart, he decided to go to Europe with Frank Nevada to busk in the mid-1990s. That's where he decided to concentrate on his songwriting. Out came acoustic country-tinged songs with a rocking pneumonia. In 1997 he decided to form his own band with ex-Blue Rodeo drummer Clive Anderson, guitarist Steve Koch (The Handsome Neds) and bassist Colleen Hodgson. They have since released a cassette (1997) and a CD (The John Borra Band - 1999). Jason Collette head John say something about one night at seven in the morning and said: "Man, if you don't use that for the title of your next album, I will." And so it came to be. With raspberry pie and his step-daughter Alex and her scooter, he came to the sugar camp with guitar in hand.

The Maple Leaf Hex Continues: Since I was press ganged into playing this one song cassette in 1993 on The Great North Wind, when the Toronto Maple Leafs last got into the semi-finals (against the LA Kings), this ridiculous song has come to the rescue. When I say rescue it's because I really dislike the Leafs. It seems that every time I dig this gem out and play it The Leafs fail to win another playoff game and are eliminated. So I played it and they got the crap beat out of them by the Carolina Hurricanes later the same night.

Something's Happening Here!
Well, I tried to do what I would normally do but 5 minutes before going to air the station was knocked out of commission at our transmitter site. So I ended up playing radio for half an hour listening to Jigzup by Oliver Schroer. A half our later we were back so I cancelled the live Buzz Upshaw Band concert and made due with half a show. We did record the band for a later broadcast but it never went to air. I did interview Buzz at his home in July, 2002 and used that after he passed away two years later to do a special on him. . This week Stompin' Tom Time was inaugurated. This is a weekly feature of a Stompin' Tom song which still continues as we write, speak, think and are. It usually happens at the bottom of the hour except for certain weeks when it just doesn't fit - like when I'm doing something extra special. Every Sugar Camp should have a bit of Stompin' Tom time to go along with the pie
