This was the first of a series of Daisy DeBolt encounters at the Sugar Camp. Over the past 5 years she has appeared on the program numerous times in different configurations. I have been collecting live recordings of these events and will be issuing a CD of Daisy at the Sugar Camp shortly. On this first occasion, she brought maestro accordionist Bob Derkach with her to premier her new CD Just Mountain Songs. They did two live cuts that were hair raising experiences. She loved the program so much that she released a CD of it herself - just to show people what she was like on radio - interview and all. Like a documentary CD.

Stephen Fearing is one of those people who, for whatever reason, just click with me. The result was a fantastic show to listen to. When I heard the tape of the program later I was really pleased. I never really know how a program is coming over, especially to a listener's ears because I'm too busy producing it live on air. This was a great show, he and I on the same plain at the same time. Bang on!

Mike McKenna is a Toronto blues guitar affection ado who has played in McKenna Mendleson Mainline, Luke and the Apostles, Downchild Blues Band, Slidewinder, and others. He's sold guitars for Long & McQuade's and really knows his stuff.
The Fender Telecaster was invented in 1948 and first made public at a NAMM trade show in 1950 in its Esquire (one pickup) format. It was released in its Tely form as the Broadcaster in 1950 but subsequently taken off the market since the Gretch Company held that name. No-casters - Telys with only the Fender logo - appeared for about a year until Leo Fender finally came up with the Telecaster name.
The Fender Telecaster was the first solid body electric guitar to be put on the market. Originally aimed at country music performers (Fender had been in the lap steel market for a number of years by then) it soon caught on with the Chicago blues players and the soon to be rock n' roll movement. Although Fender and Gibson put out other electric guitars, the Telecaster always remained a favourite because of its tone and playability.
In the 1970s, CBS, which had purchased the Fender company in the mid-60's, cranked out as many Fender guitars as humanly possible - partly due to public demand. As company documents in the early '80's admitted, the guitars were cheaply made and sounded lousy. But the Telecaster, due to its simplistic design, still remained true to its original form.
Tonight, we play music of and by the Fender Telecaster. Mike McKenna had a Japanese-made Tely in the studio with his amp and sh0wed us some of the licks and sounds that only a Telecaster could produce.
ROY BUCHANAN: Sweet Dreams (D Gibson)
Roy Buchanan: Polydor 2391042 - 1972
Telecaster player Roy Buchanan was one of the original Hawks, backing Arkansas traveller, Rompin' Ronnie Hawkins. Hawkins found himself a permanent home in Toronto in the 1950's where he founded the Hawks, featuring Robbie Robertson on the bass guitar. When Buchanan left the band Robertson moved over to the electric guitar, learning many of Buchanan's licks)
THE PAUL BUTTERFIELD BLUES BAND: Shake Your Money Maker
(adp by P Butterfield)
The Paul Butterfield Blues Band: Electra EKL-249 - 1965
(Featuring the Telecaster playing of Mike Bloomfield)
LUKE & THE APOSTLES: Been Burnt (R Bennett)
45 rpm: Electra DK 4510 - circa 1966
(Featuring Mike McKenna on the Telecaster)
(Although Mike McKenna is best known for his work with Mainline, he was primarily known as the player of a Gibson Les Paul. The Telecaster was his first real guitar. His first records were made with Luke & The Apostles featuring the Tely)
RONNIE HAWKINS & THE HAWKS: Come Love (M Oliver)
The Best of Ronnie Hawkins: Roulette Records R-25255
- circa 1965
(Robbie Robertson on the Telecaster)
(Robbie Robertson had a very unique sound in the early 1960s and this was largely based on his ability to bend strings. In those days they didn't make light guage strings so Robertson used banjo strings on his telecaster. He quickly became the most emulated guitarist in Toronto. According to McKenna, every Toronto band had to have a Telecaster sound. Everybody wanted to sound like Robbie in those days)
JOHN HAMMOND: I Want You To Love Me (M Waters)
So Many Roads: Vanguard Stereolab VSD-79178 - 1965
(Robbie Robertson featured on Telecaster)
(As proof of Robertson's abilities, after his stint with the Hawks, he and Levon Helm backed Hammond and Bob Dylan before regrouping with the Hawks in Woodstock, NY as the Band)
MIKE McKENNA: Telecaster demonstration
Live In Studio
ALBERT COLLINS: Avalanche (A Collins)
Ice Pickin': Alligator Records AL 4713 - 1978
(Collins almost always had a capo on the seventh fret of his Telecaster, allowing him to utilize icey cold high notes, thus his moniker: The Ice Man)
DANNY GATTON: Funky Mama (J Patton)
88 Elmira Street: Electra 96 10324 - 1991
(One of the unsung heroes of the electric guitar, Danny Gatton's career paralleled that of Roy Buchanan's. Co-incidentally, both ended up committing suicide. Gatton played behind rockablilly performer Robert Gordon for many years and could play countless styles of music)

DWIGHT YOAKUM: Guitars, Cadillacs (D Yoakum)
Guitars, Cadillacs etc. etc: Reprise Warner 546499 -
1986
(Pete Anderson on the Telecaster)
(Just to prove a point, the Fender Telecaster was originally
invented for country music performers. Although it went on to become one
of the most recorded guitars in history, featured in all kinds of music,
Leo Fender originally wanted to give the country guitarist the same kind
of on-stage presence as the lap steel player. Since hollow-body electrics
of the day could ohly be played at a very low volume due to instant feedback
problems, Fender's new guitar could scream as loud as amplifiers would
let them. Leo Fender sold out to CBS music in the mid-1960's due to ill-health.
He did form another company, Music Man, in the 1970's and passed away in
the mid-1990s.)
