We had been meeting to play our favorite tunes for some time, hence came the idea of recording these tunes and Reel à Deux was born.

Although much of this repertoire came to us from the British Isles, the Quebec fiddlers learned and adapted these pieces using their imagination and intuition. This gives Quebec fiddle music its richness.

We hope to pass on some of our heritage, now your heritage.

This first reel, from the repertoire of fiddler Yvon Mimeault, features his incredible energy and dynamics. The second piece is from Saint-Basile-de-Portneuf fiddler, André Alain, followed by an interpretation of a harmonica tune, Reel de la broue (Froth Reel) played by Mr. Luc Veilleux from Sherbrooke. It is said that when his father played this on the harmonica froth foamed from the instrument.

Two compositions from the famous fiddler, Louis "Pitou" Boudreault of Chicoutimi. Mr. Boudreault, an important figure in the history of Quebec fiddle music, captivated audiences with his story telling as well as his music.

These two jigs, from the repertoire of Eric Corrigan, reflect the Irish influence of those who settled in the area of Shannon and Valcartier, north of Quebec City.

This adaptation of an Irish reel is characteristic of this Joncquière fiddler, William Gagnon's ingenuity.

These three gallops are typically from the Quebec City region. The first is from Eddie Whelan of Stoneham, the other two come from well known fiddler Jos Bouchard. Gallops were used for certain parts of Quadrilles.

Three reels composed by Éric. The first two are dedicated to two terrific callers from the Lysander Falls Pavillion, Inverness. The last reel is for his uncle and godfather, Léo Fauteux, who was a step-dancer and singer.

The heritage of the Irish and Scottish who settled in the Gaspé region gives us a unique repertoire and playing style. Mr. Mimeault and Mr. Réhel, two fine Gaspesian fiddlers, garnered from these influences.

Reels from Gustave Denis, a Gaspesian fiddler with remarkable style.

Two airs composed by Éric Favreau. The first piece is dedicated to two good friends: Tracy Pettit and Dominique Sarny, and the second one is for his uncle, Ronald Cotnoir, a fiddler with a creative spirit who inspired Éric. The violins are tuned G-D-G-D.

A Grondeuse is generally a reel played with G tuned to A, generating an interesting drone. The first piece comes from the Gaspesian, Elzéard Lepage. The second was learned from Lisa Orenstein, who in turn had learned it from Franco-American Wilfred Guillette. The third comes from Daniel Roy of Quebec city.

We learned the first tune from Lauréat Goulet from St-Pierre-de-Broughton. Every summer, for the past 35 years, he has played at the Lysander Pavilion, Inverness. Quebec, one of the few places where authentic traditional dances are still held. The second piece comes from the Soucy Family. During the 1950's their numerous records, as well as their weekly radio and television shows, made them very popular.

Reels from two Acadian violin players. The unique sound is provided by the G-D-G-D tuning.

Barry Forman

Most Requested Fiddle Tunes for you...: Sunflower International Records - SI - 1003 - 1975

Barry Forman, fiddle; Ken Forman, fiddle; Bill Hillman, guitars; Sue On Hillman, drums and percussion; Denis Rondeau, Bass; Mark Rutherford, piano, organ & flute

Produced by Alex Groshak. Recorded at Century 12 Studios, Winnipeg MB

Tracks: Anniversary Song; Arkansas Traveller / Chicken Reel; Andy's Jig / Honest John; Joys of Quebec; Frisco Waltz; Rippling Water Jig; Maple Sugar; Hillbilly Calypso; Rubber Dolly / Ragtime Annie; Dawn Waltz; Flop Eared Mule / Sailor's Hornpipe; Big John McNeill

Barry's first album Fun N' Fiddle with Forman contained twelve of Barry's Favorites. By contrast this album contains seventeen of his most requested fiddle tunes. These tunes have been rearranged by Barry. The result is a most refreshing approach to old time fiddle music.

The Forman fiddle style is the culmination of his early violin training with Mr Alex Whyte, the Canadian fiddle stylings of his father Lorne, and the influence of the well known Country Rock Trio - The Western Union. This fiddle style is being passed on to his son Kent. Kent is nine years old and is Manitoba's Junior Fiddle Champ.

The musicians on the album are no strangers to the music scene. Bill Hillman does all the guitar work with Sue On Hillman on drums. Denis Rondeau plays bass and Mark Rutherford does piano, flute and organ.

Barry, a former school teacher, now has the Ford and Mercury dealership in Rivers, Manitoba. It's now Fun N' Fiddle with Forman N' Ford.

Enjoy the album.

Rivers, Manitoba has always been known as a fiddle town. A great contributor to this reputations, Alex Whyte, has taught violin in Rivers for three generations, that is, Barry’s Father, Barry and now Barry’s son.

Rivers also boasts one of the finest pipe bands in Canada in Don Mitchell and the River Boys Pipe Band. One of the pipers, Murray Brown, is featured on this album as is his father, Vern Brown, who adds his touches on piano and organ. Also from Rivers are Jake Kroeger on guitar, Sonny Popoff on drums and Dennis Rondeau on bass.

This album contains a variety of fiddle sounds from the “Waltz Quadrille” played as it was done at dances years ago, to the electric fiddle sounds in “Battle of New Orleans”.

Reg Freer and His Orchestra
The Best of R.B, Academy Records International ARIS-8012

Reg Freer, fiddle; Margaret King, piano; Marg Walker, bass; Tom Levitt, guitar; Morley Winter, drums

Tunes: Navy Island Reel; French Minkuet; Mother's Favourite Jig; Pennsylvania Polka; Dad's Waltz; Jessica; Smash The Window; Flanigans Polka; St. Anne's Reel; Somewhere, Somebody's Waiting For you; He Never Came Back; Steel Guitar Rag; The High Toned Dance; The Little Shirt My Mother Made For Me; Waiting For The Robert E Lee; The Dill Pickle Rag; Hill Lilly Reel

Mrs Margaret King, a housewife from Watford, has been playing with Reg's orchestra for 12 years. She's also the organist for her church, teaches music at Metcalfe Central School, and gives piano lessons in her home. Margaret has recorded her own LP entitled "Familiar Melodies with Margaret King".

Mrs Marg. Walker from Ailsa Craig, a housewife and busy mother of four boys plays with the "Westernaires" a local group from Parkhill. She plays bass as well as piano - undoubtedly a very talented lady.

Tom Levitt, a native of Strathroy, who is a salesman for a construction company in London, first played with Reg about four years ago. Playing with an orchestra for the first time, he has certainly become on the best guitar players around - and proves it when he plays two of his favourites on the album.

Morley Winter, a commercial artist at St. Thomas, is a Napier boy. He went to school in Strathroy and has played the drums with Reg for about five years. He also plays with a group in London.

R.B. Freer started his musical career at the age of 12 when his grandparents bought him a guitar. Over the years he has played at wedding receptions, showers, dances and other community assemblies. During the four years he was in the war, in England, Italy, Holland and Belgium, his music "opened many doors".

For the past few years a number of friends have encouraged Reg to make a record. He finally has - so draw back the rug or pull up a chair and listen to forty minutes of "THE BEST OF R.B."

More of R.B., Academy Records International ARIS-8020, circa 1965

Reg Freer, fiddle; Margaret King, piano; Marg Walker, bass; Gerry Clement, bass; Morely Winter, drums; Tom Leavitt, electric guitar

Engineer: Donald L. Scotland

Tunes: Frolic in the Minors; Peekaboo Waltz / Over the Waves; Heel & Toe Polka; Tugerman’s Jig; When You And I Were Young Maggie; Uncle Bob’s Two Step; Miss McLeod’s Reel; To The Ladies; Medley: Forever Blowing Bubbles / The World Is Waiting For the Sunrise / Five Foot Two; Utah Trail; Let Me Be Your Little Sweetheart; I Too It; Row, Row, Row; Hemrider’s Lament; Snowflake Breakdown

Well, here it is! In answer to many requests, R.B. Freer has made his second record. One even more enjoyable than the first.

Nearly everyone around Kerwood has heard Reg’s ‘hospital song’ – ‘The Hemrider’s Lament’ – which poor Reg says is all too true. The song stated out as a short poem while he was a patient in the Strathroy – Middlesex Hospital, but ended up as a thirteen verse poem. On the strong advice of a clergyman friend, Reg set it to music and it has become a favourite of all.

Also featured on the record is ‘Uncle Bob’s Two Step’, a family tune which lacks any other title as far as we know. ‘Let Me Be Your Little Sweetheart’ is one of Reg’s Favourites. He learned it from on of his army buddies while overseas and it has been enjoyed by hundreds since that time.

So sit down, take it easy and enjoy a collection and variety of music and songs with ‘More of R.B.’
