Topic: Toronto's Funkmaster - Domenic Troiano
Guests: Mike McKenna & Roy Kenner

Program 284

Domenic (Don) Troiano was born in Italy in 1946, emigrated to Toronto in 1949 and began playing guitar by 1959. He joined The Hawks, replacing his guitar-hero Robbie Robertson. That band became Robbie Lane & The Disciples. After leaving them he emerged in The Five Rogues which eventually morphed into The Mandala, a hugely successful R&B band that toured North America with Steppenwolf and Three Dog Night.

After lead singer, George Oliver, left the band, Roy Kenner (Roy Kenner & The Associates) was approached to replace him. In 1969 Troiano called it quits and formed Bush with Kenner and Mandala drummer Whitey Glan along with Toronto bass player Prakesh John. They recorded a stellar LP which was buried in a legal dispute between ABC Dunhill Records and their management company. Shortly thereafter, Troiano was asked to replace Joe Walsh in The James Gang. Troiano agreed with the proviso that Kenner be included as singer. Within 16 months Troiano released two LPs with James Gang plus a solo album before leaving to join Burton Cummings in The Guess Who.

Another aspect of his career was production: at a young age he actually produced singles for Mandala. He went on to produced an album by his wife, Shawne Jackson, another mainstay of the Toronto R&B scene.

After the demise of The Guess Who in the mid-1970s, Domenic went on to release 3 solo LPs on Capitol Records. In the early 80s he formed Black Market which released only one album. From then on Troiano got into the entertainment business, providing soundtrack music for TV and films.

A few years ago he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. He passed away in Toronto on May 26.
