The Hadfield brothers. Chris, the astronaut, and Dave, the Air Canada pilot. Both write and sing songs about aviation and riding rockets into outer space. Chris is the first human being to record an entire album of songs from the International Space Station. In 1997 his brother Dave, who lives up in Barrie Ontario, brought Chris onto my show as he was preparing for his second (of three) mission, this time to the ISS which included a space walk. Dave’s cut comes from a CD he just released about flying in 2018. I’ve got Chris’s album on vinyl to make up for that.

Okay, so everybody’s heard this song, so you’ve all heard the bass playing of Dennis Pendrith, some of you since you can remember. On a sadder note: on August 7, 2012, the whale that inspired Raffi to make the song, Kavna, died at age 46 in Vancouver.

Interestingly, my copy of this album has the wrong label on side one. It reads 'Difficult to Cure' by Rainbow with the serial PD 1-6316 - one number before League of Gentlemen, the label for side two. All the songs on the record though are by the League.

The back cover of the album features all their gigs from the album release tour of 1980. It says they played two gigs at the El Mocambo in Toronto June 17 and 18, 1981.

This was a band called the Cornells (originally the Tornados) who used the name Surf Riders for this recording. They got to open for the Beach Boys at the Pavilion Skating Rink in Huntington Beach, California on Feb 8, 1964 if it was the same Surf Riders. There was also a Surf Riders band from Minnesota, and ex-Byrd Gene Clark was in a Surf Riders band in Kansas before he joined the New Christy Minstrels and made his way to LA.

Johnny Kitchen was a bit of an enigma in the music scene; no one knew who he actually was until recently. His real name was Jack Maurice Millman (b. Canada, Nov 1930). He helped produced and record the Wild Man Fisher album that Frank Zappa put out on his Bizarre Records label.

Instead, he joined Keith McKie to form Kensington Market. After that he recorded two solo albums before taking his leave from the music biz for a while. 50 years after the original demise of the Apostles, Gibson returned to the studio to record the band’s first album, in 2017.

Malcolm Tomlinson
b. London UK 16 June 1946 / d. Toronto 2 April 2016 (60)

Malcom was a neighbour of mine for many years, until he passed away in 2016. He started out in the early 1960s playing drums in London in a band called ‘The Panthers’. In January 1963, he joined Jeff Curtis & The Flames. The group recorded a five-track acetate with legendary producer Joe Meek before Tomlinson left (in mid-1964) to join ‘The Del Mar Trio’. In February 1965, the group recorded 4 tracks for EMI at Abbey Road. Two months later, they changed their name to ‘James Deane & The London Cats’. In June 1966, Tomlinson joined forces with two members of ‘The Noblemen’ which changed its name to ‘The Motivation’.

By the end of the 60s Tomlinson moved to Toronto  with his former colleague from ‘Jeff Curtis & The Flames’, guitarist Louis McKelvey. They formed the group called ‘Milkwood’ which performed at the legendary ‘Toronto Rock and Roll Revival’ at Varsity Stadium on 13 September 1969. The band also recorded an unreleased LP for Polydor Records. The pair also appeared on another unreleased LP, this time by Toronto singer Jay Telfer. McKelvey and Tomlinson then formed another new band based out of Toronto, Damage, but this was short-lived. Tomlinson played in a succession of local bands, including Syrinx, and a latter day version of Rhinoceros.

In 1973, Tomlinson appeared on (CIUT host) Bill King's album 'Goodbye Superdad' as well as on John Mills Cockell's first solo shot, 'Heartbeat'. He then joined Rick James' ‘Stone City Band’ and appeared on another LP that was never released. He later recorded with the ‘Bearfoot’ and then formed the Malcolm Tomlinson Band.

Produced by Tom Cochrane & Ken Greer, 1989
Recorded by Biff Dawes and Westwood One Mobile Facility at the Jubilee Auditorium, Edmonton, March 1988
Mixed by Steve Rinkoff at The MetalWorks
Mastered by Bob Ludwig at Masterdisk, NYC

Tom Cochrane & Red Rider were a quintessential Canadian rock band that made it big here but failed to break out in the United States. One exception was this song, Lunatic Fringe, which became popular on US album-oriented rock radio.

The band was formed in Toronto in 1975 and began playing around Toronto, performing both original and cover music. Needing a good lead singer, Capitol Records of Canada suggested that they team up with songwriter Tom Cochrane. After an initial meeting, some of the band welcomed the addition of Cochrane but two of its members quit as a result. in 1987, the band, who had been nominated 11 times for Juno Awards, finally was awarded one for Group of the Year. Their final band album, The Symphony Sessions, which was recorded in March 1989, saw the band performing with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, as Procol Harum had done seventeen years before.

Meanwhile another band called The Nazz was playing down in Phoenix, lead by a young Vince Furnier who would later emerge as Alice Cooper. Rundgren’s Nazz put out three studio albums before calling it quits:  (Nazz, Nazz Nazz, and Nazz III) before he decided to go solo.

The song was only ever performed live “in concert” twice. It was inspired by the country classic “Ghost Riders In The Sky”. In November 2009, the song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. Jim Morrison recorded his main vocals and then whispered the lyrics over them to create the echo effect.
