Produced by George Martin, 1966
Recorded at EMI Studios, London

Another British pop band produced by George Martin at Abby Road studios. These guys were mods and were competitors to The Who and The Small Faces. They were considered too hard core to get a pop hit. This song was released as their second single and although they were really popular in clubs, live, their records didn’t sell well. They changed their style to psychedelic in 1967 but never seemed to get a break.

b. Northern Ireland, 1902 - d. Toronto, 1954

Magill moved from Northern Ireland to Toronto in the early 1930s and worked in the CNR's telegraph department for 20 years. As a fiddler, Magill performed with his band, the Northern Ramblers, for square dances in Toronto and was heard weekly from 1946-54 on CFRB.

Bunty Petrie: fiddle
Dick Nolan: guitar
Roy Penny: lead guitar
Johnny Bourque (Burke): bass
Moose Latreck: MC
Produced by Arc Records 1963
Recorded live at The Drake Hotel, Queen St W, Toronto

This is the same Drake Hotel in Toronto’s Parkdale from when it was a Country and Western palace. The album wasn’t actually recorded there, but they did use the MCing of Toronto DJ Moose Latreck, along with the crowd noise and applause from a real gig blended in. All four musicians were excellent at what they did. Roy Penny’s lead guitar work was stellar, up there with some of the best. Both he, and the great Dick Nolan, were from Corner Brook NL; Johnny Burk and Bunty Petrie were from Nouveau Brunswick.

From Regina, Saskatchewan, this was an early version of The White Knights. Their 45, which was a hit back in December 1967, is now very collectable. They also had an otherwise unreleased cut, Eat Your Hot Dog Boy, included on Birchmount's Strictly Canadian compilation. This is reputedly an impressive psych-punker.

Spencer David Nelson Davies
b. 17 July 1939 Swansea, Wales / d. 19 Oct 2020 (81) Los Angeles, CA

One of the fathers of the British Blues! Spencer Davis began learning to play harmonica and accordion at the age of 6. He moved to London when he was 16 and began working in the Post Office Savings Bank. His early musical influences were skiffle, jazz and blues. Musical artists who influenced him were Big Bill Broonzy, Leadbelly, Buddy Holly and British players like Davey Graham, John Martyn, Alexis Korner and Long John Baldry. By the time he was 16, Davis was hooked on the guitar and the American rhythm and blues which, at that time, was making its way across the Atlantic.

In 1963, Davis went to the Golden Eagle in Birmingham to see the ‘Muff Wood Jazz Band’, a traditional outfit featuring Muff on bass and his brother, a young teenaged Steve Winwood, on keys. Davis persuaded them to join him and drummer Pete York as the Rhythm and Blues Quartet called ‘The Spencer Davis Group’.

When he was eight years old, he was inspired by Elvis Presley and the Ventures to start playing guitar. His teacher directed him toward jazz standards. He cites as influences jazz guitarists George Benson and Kenny Burrell and bluegrass and country guitarists Clarence White and Doc Watson. He attended Berklee College of Music in 1971. At nineteen, he was hired by Chick Corea to replace Bill Connors in the pioneering jazz fusion band Return to Forever. After that band broke up in 1976, he began his solo career. His early albums were influential among rock and jazz guitarists.

Eva Narcissus Boyd

Another huge hit for songwriters Carole King and Gerry Goffin. Little Eva was their baby sitter. The song reached #1 in the United States in 1962. It sold over one million copies.  It’s the perfect example of the Wall of Sound: other than bass and drums, you can’t tell what other instruments are being played. The Beatles recorded the song for the BBC radio show Saturday Club on 22 January 1963, which was first broadcast four days later. It was released on their album, Live at the BBC, in 1994.

Kramer was managed by Brian Epstein who forworded Lennon & McCartney songs for him to consider recording in 1963. His first hit single release was “Do You Want To Know A Secret”, followed by “I’ll Keep You Satisfied”, “Bad To Me” and “From A Window”. Although Kramer never really broke through in North America, he is considered to be a father of the Invasion. The Dakotas, who were a well known band like The Shadows, backed him in the studio. They did play Toronto’s Maple Leaf Gardens November 1, 1964 on a double bill with Gerry & The Pacemakers.

Carmine Appice drums, vocals

Recorded by Joe Veneri & Bill Stahl

They recorded five albums during the years 1967–69, before disbanding inn 1970. Originally called The Electric Pigeons, they changed their name to The Pigeons. Ahmet Ertegun, their label's founder and president, didn't like that name and told them to change it.
Carmine Appice: We tried to think up a new name but were getting nowhere until we played a gig at the Page 2 club on Long Island and ended up talking to a chick named Dee Dee who worked there. She told us how her grandfather used to call her Vanilla Fudge. Then she looked at us and added 'Maybe you guys should call yourselves that---you're like white soul music'. We liked it. We told our manager, Phil Basile. He liked it. We told Atlantic and they liked it, too. So Vanilla Fudge it was".

According to Ritchie Blackmore and Jon Lord, Vanilla Fudge's organ-heavy sound was a large influence on the British band Deep Purple, with Blackmore even stating that his band wanted to be a "Vanilla Fudge clone" in its early years.

On March 14, 1970, Vanilla Fudge played a farewell concert at the Phil Basile's Action House. After that, Bogert & Appice departed to go ahead with another group, Cactus, that they'd been planning since late 1969. In 1972 they left Cactus and formed Beck, Bogert & Appice with guitarist Jeff Beck.

Trapeze got together in 1969 and a year later were signed to the Moody Blues record label Threshold Records. The band reportedly declined an offer to join The Beatles’ Apple Records, as they believed that they would have more creative freedom with Threshold. After their original release, two members quit the band and were never replace; they became a three piece band instead. We’re Just The Band, released in 1972, went to number 9 on Billboard’s Hot 100.  The band suffered the loss of various players over the years to other great bands, like Deep Purple, Judas Priest and Whitesnake. They called it quits in 1982 and since then have staged re-union tours.
