He and his wife Flo used LSD, psilocybin an other psychedelic drugs. They lived there for about three years, playing clubs and recording several albums. Ferguson was mentioned in Tom Wolf’s book, The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test, which detailed the psychedelic scene.

In 1967, as the Millbrook experiment was ending, Ferguson moved his family to India and taught at the Krishnamurti-based Rishi Valley School near Madras. He later moved to England and later to California.

He played on Miles Davis' albums In A Silent Way, Bitches Brew  as a member of Davis’ band.  From 1971 – 76 fronted the Mahavishnu Orchestra.  This was JM’s second album but he panned it: On his website he writes: “In 1969, I signed a contract in America for 2 records. First was 'Devotion' that was destroyed by producer Alan Douglas who mixed the recording in my absence.” However the album received great critical reviews. He has lived in Monaco since the late 1980s.

Alan Douglas Rubenstein (July 20, 1931 – June 7, 2014) was an American record producer from Boston, who worked with Jimi Hendrix (posthumous catalog), Miles Davis, John McLaughlin, Lenny Bruce and the Last Poets. He ran his own record label, Douglas Records.

By the 1950s, his audience had begun to shrink, largely because he had difficulty adapting to the new electric blues. His final recording session, for RCA Victor, was in 1949. Pilling and his brother Brian then moved to England where they formed a band called Wages of Sin and spent some time touring as a back-up for Cat Stevens in 1970, but returned to Toronto by the end of that year. The Fudge recorded five albums during the years 1967–69, before disbanding inn 1970.  Originally called The Electric Pigeons, they changed their name to The Pigeons. Ahmet Ertegun, their label's founder and president, didn't like that name and told them to change it.

The Fudge were big Beatle fans and recorded Eleanor Rigby as well. They were a major influence on Deep Purple who also covered a Beatles’ song: Help!

On March 14, 1970, Vanilla Fudge played a farewell concert at the Phil Basile's Action House. After that, Bogert & Appice departed to go ahead with another group, Cactus, that they'd been planning since late 1969. In 1972 they left Cactus and formed Beck, Bogert & Appice with guitarist Jeff Beck.

That winter they moved to London, England where they were critically aclaimed. After serving in other peoples’ bands (like Anne Murray, Maria Muldaur, Ian & Syvia’s Great Speckled Bird, Paul Butterfield’s Better Days), Garrett claimed: "I wanted to sing.
