DJ Serious (Dave Yan) was nominated for a Juno Award for this album, featuring various rappers grooving to the beats of DJ Serious. Asicks was a guy from the Cryptic Souls Crew, popular in the 1990s in Toronto. Interestingly, Serious used to date my daughter while the late Mastering man Nick Blagona was dating my sister! DJ Serious was one of the hosts of CIUT’s long lived hiphop show called Stylistik Endeavors for over ten years.

Guelph based Celtic Blue were a Pogues inspired band featuring the fiddle playing of Riki Gee. He began using that name after the collapse of his former identity as Arthur Gee and Tumbleweed Records out of Colorado. After training in Yorkville, Gee released two rare albums of his original works in the early 1970s. After that he completely reinvented himself and continue to perform and record into the early 2000s.

Allan began his radio career at CJSW in Calagary where he gained notoriety after out-smarting the University student body who wanted to shut the student run radio station down. (The Brownesians made a song about it called “How Allen Saved The Radio Station). In the late 1980s he moved to Toronto and immediately got involved with CIUT, hosting The Twisting Postman and later, A Few Acres of Snow. That was where he met CIUT programmer Jen Norfolk who married and moved back to Calgary. Allan was also an original member of Lost and Profound and the Rembetica Hipsters.
“Calgary Does Connors” is a great compilation featuring artists from Calgary performing Stompin’ Tom songs. Allen claimed that he covered this particular song because “it was one of Tom’s most political statements.” He went on to claim, in the liner notes of Bring Your Own Plywood, that Connors was not the “be-all and end-all of the distinctly Canadian country sound.” He stated matter-of-factly that “I’m sure Tom would second me when I urge you to seek out the music of Stevedore Steve and Ward Allen, Mac Beattie, and Marcel Martel, and Roy Payne and Earl Mitton and so many other incredible performers that have been undeservedly ignored and forgotten.”
Allen was an inspiration to us all.

Barber was an English jazz musician who scored a UK top twenty trad jazz hit with "Petite Fleur" in 1959 and helped begin the careers of many musicians. One of them was banjo player Lonnie Donegan, whose appearances with Barber triggered the skiffle craze of the mid-1950s with his first transatlantic hit, "Rock Island Line", that he recorded while still performing with Chris Barber's band. Alexis Korner came out of his band, and Barber sponsored African-American blues musicians to visit Britain, which makes him a significant figure in launching the British rhythm and blues and "beat boom" scenes that would eventually erupt as the British Invasion. He also briefly played with Ken Colyer’s band.

A Stompin’ Tom song with a rockabilly twinge. Laforme was a member of the Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation. He passed away Thursday, the 20th of July 2023 (69) Caledonia ON. Laforme was a touring member of the Stompin’ Tom Connors Band for three Canadian tours, performing with Connors right up to 2011. This album was released on Stompin’ Tom’s short-lived Assist Canadian Talent (ACT) label. He also backed Tom (lead guitarist) at the closing of Maple Leaf Gardens.

Inspired by the guitar playing of Robby Robertson when he was a Hawk, Mike formed a trio who went on to become Luke and the Apsostles (1964 -67). When Luke Gibson left the band (to form Kensington Market), Mike joined up with Mendelson Joe to form McKenna Mendelson Mainline which initially included former Paupers bass player Denny Gerrard. Denny left Mainline before they officially recorded – but he does appear on the bootlegged release of McKenna Mendelson Blues. I saw them open for The Fugs at Massey Hall (with Geddy Lee). That was the last gig Gerrard played with Mainline. So here we have him 30 years later, recorded with McKenna’s band Slidewinder doing a McKenna Mendelson Mainline song. He’s also played with:

"Free as a Bird" is a song originally composed and recorded in 1977 as a home demo by John Lennon. In 1995 a studio version of the recording, incorporating contributions from Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr, was released as a single by the Beatles, 25 years after their break-up. The single was released as part of the promotion for The Beatles Anthology video documentary and the band's Anthology 1 compilation album. For the Anthology project, McCartney asked Lennon's widow Yoko Ono for unreleased material by Lennon to which the three remaining ex-Beatles could contribute
