William Dunn
b. Montreal Aug 14, 1941 / d. Aug 5, 2013 Ottawa ON (71)

Dunn didn’t spend a lot of time as a folksinger; he did that for a couple of years in the early 70s. But in 1980 he recorded his comeback album, ‘The Pacific’, to finish his vinyl output. He was mostly interested in writing music for films and getting into directing. He was also a prominent member of the New Democratic Party and ran in the 1993 federal election. He was inducted into the Aboriginal Walk of Honour in 2005. But since that time, he recordings have had a huge resurgence.

Raven Kanatakta of Digging Roots once asked him:  “'Hey Willie, how do you write your songs?' He was like, 'Well, I write songs that will last 300 years.' He was just this Renaissance person that was bringing back that heartbeat and that movement that we're feeling in the community right now, where people can sing their songs again and where they can play their drums, and where they can express who they are and where they come from," recalled Raven.

Up until Patsy Cline's recordings in the late 1950s and early 1960s there were only a handful of country and western female singers; and the title of queen belonged solely to Kitty Wells. It was Cline who dethroned Wells with classic performances on cuts like "Walkin' After Midnight" and the Willie Nelson composition "Crazy," which combined the pop characteristics of Patti Page and Kay Starr with the hillbilly traits of Hank Williams.

Gustavus  Cannon
b. September 12, 1883 Red Banks, Miss / d. October 15, 1979 (96) Memphis

Cannon’s tombstone lists him as ‘composer, songster, jug band pioneer, pride of Memphis, Beale Street Balladeer’.

Cannon and Hosea Woods wrote and recorded Walk Right In back in 1929. Thirty years later it became a #1 hit song by The Rooftop Singers who claimed that it was an original piece, arranged by them in 1962. On the recording, two Rooftop Singers claimed the songwriting credit: Erik Darling and Bill Svanoe. Since the record went to No. 1 and was nominated for a Grammy Award, royalties were substantial.

At the time, Gus Cannon was living in a gardner’s shack in Memphis and had to pawn his banjo for $20 worth of coal. When the Rooftop Singer’s hit the top of the charts with Walk Right In, it was quickly pointed out that Darling and Svanoe didn’t write the song and songwriting credits reverted back to Cannon and Woods. Because of this, Cannon was then asked to record an album for Stax Records in 1963 and lived out the rest of his life with some money.

Al Cromwell made quite a name for himself playing blues in Toronto in the 1960s, then for personal reasons, he quit the scene. I think it was Rick Fielding who found him washing windows on Queen Street West and got him into our studios. He was nervous, sweating, but as soon as the music started, he was the coolest. He recorded a song for Live at Grossman's Vol 1 but apart from some YouTube video, this might be one of his only recordings. Al passed away in 1995.
