This is just a great song in every respect. One of the most under-rated bands of the British Invasion. They formed in 1963 and saw the likes of Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck playing lead guitar for them. Not that shoddy a CV!

5.   Herman’s Hermits: Just A Little Bit Better
(Kenny Young)
The Best Of Hermans Hermits: Quality Records V1783
Manchester UK
Peter Noone: vocals
Derek Leckenby: lead guitar
Keith Hopwood: rhythm guitar
Barry Whitwam: drums

Produced by Mickie Most, 1965

Herman’s Hermits lead an impressive charge up the charts in 1965. Their barrage started with the release of “Can’t You Hear My Heartbeat” followed by “Silhouettes”, “Mr. Brown (You’ve Got A Lovely Daughter)”, “Wonderful World”, “I’m Henry The VIII, I Am” before releasing “Just A Little Bit Better” in August. (They would go on to release another great single, “A Must To Avoid” in December). All in all, not a bad year for The Hermits.

After graduation, McGuinn performed solo at various coffeehouses on the folk music circuit where he was hired as a sideman by the Limeliters, the Chad Mitchell Trio. He also played guitar and sang backup harmonies for Bobby Darin. During 1963, just one year before he co-founded The Byrds, McGuinn worked as a studio musician in New York, recording with Judy Collins and Simon & Garfunkel. Because of Beatlemania in 1964, he decided to put a folk music group together to play rock music: thus The Byrds. This is off Roger’s second solo album after leaving The Byrds.

The early Guess Who. Released on Quality Records Reo subsidiary, deliberately mis-credited to Bob Ashley & The Reflections. By 1965, the group was forced to change its name to Chad Allan & the Expressions after a U.S. group called The Reflections had scored a hit with "Just Like Romeo & Juliet".

14. Smyle: Better Road Ahead

Smyle: Columbia Records ES-90017
Burlington ON

Smyle got together in Hamilton ON in 1967. In 1969 they moved to Toronto after touring the teen circuit for a couple of years. In Toronto they recorded a single "Glory, Glory" which became a hit and secured them a recording contract with Columbia Records. Unfortunately for them, there were no Canadian content laws back then and their 1970 album received little or no airplay. Columbia dropped them and they called it quits after releasing two more 45s independently.

This guy was in the Toronto band called The Sparrow(s) who, after leaving the service of original lead vocalist who called himself Jack London (with a fake UK accent) recruited John Kay, went to Los Angeles and became Steppenwolf. Bonfire wrote Born To Be Wild and other songs recorded by Steppenwolf even though he went solo and left the band.

George Harrison: twelve-string lead guitar

Produced by George Martin
Recorded at Abby Road Studio 2, London UK by Norman Smith 25-26 February 1964
FIRST PUBLISHED IN CANADA JULY, 1964

"I Should Have Known Better" was one of several songs written and recorded specifically for the Beatles' debut movie, "A Hard Day's Night". The harmonica-driven arrangement by the group was similar to that heard on Frank Ifield's recording of "The Wayward Wind", a hit on the UK Singles Chart in March 1963. The Beatles were fans of Ifield and his music, and had covered his hit song "I Remember You" in their Hamburg days in 1962.

21. Five D: Dimentia
(Five D)
Five D – Ottawa Rocks, Sir John A Years: Sound Investment Enterpirises D-11101
Ottawa ON
Jack Arsenault: rhythm guitar
Brian Bradfield: drums
Brad Campbell: bass, vocal
Dave Poulin: lead vocal
John Miron: guitar
Produced by John Pozer, 1967

Another great Ottawa pop band that came together in 1963. When the Beatles hit the scene a year later, they decided to go Mersey Beat by changing their name from The Decades to B.C. And The Cavemen, and The Quotations. In 1966 they became the Fifth Dimension but just as they were about to release their first record, they were informed about the ‘Up, Up and Away’ band using the same name. So they shortened it to Five D, the same way that the Byrds did with their song Fifth Dimension.

The band were part of the televised 1967 Centennial Celebrations on Parliament Hill where Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip were in attendance. Her Majesty, an ardent rock critic, later commented: "They are good, but loud!"

They toured, opening for the likes of The Who, The Troggs, Wilson Pickett and Ohio Express amongst many others but broke up in 1970. Dimentia was most likely recorded in 1967 but never released. I got this off a 1995 compilation CD called ‘Ottawa Rocks, the Sir John A. Years’ (Sir John A. being the name of an Ottawa based record company).

22. The Newbeats: Bread and Butter
(Larry Parks / Jay Tunbow)
45 Single: Hickory Records – H 1269X
US
Dean Mathis: piano, lead vocals
Mark Mathis: bass
Larry Henley: guitar, drums
Produced 1964

Maggie, my wife, was born and raised in England. She remembers going to a teen drop-in centre with a friend. They had a few records and Bread and Butter was blaring regularly. She claims that no-one danced to it. Together between 1964–1974, The Newbeats sold over one million copies of Bread and Butter in the U.S. Their only other hit song was Run, Baby Run.

Hickroy Records was a US label formed by Roy Acuff and his partner in the Acuff Rose Music publishing firm Fred Rose around 1955.

Produced by Johnny Dee Fury, 1982
Recorded and Mixed at Amber Studios, Toronto by Paul Bonish

After serving in local bands around his home town, Fury moved to Toronto and signed with Orient Records, releasing several singles and this album. They toured across Canada and even did gigs in NYC. Fury has since focused on songwriting and is currently living in Nashville.

24. Skip & Flip: Cherry Pie
(Joe Josea)
45 single bw It Was I: Paradise Records P 1003
Gallipolis OH / Coffeeville KS
Skip Battin: bass
Flip Paxton: guitar

Larry Wayne Stevens aka Gary S Paxton b May 18, 1939 / d. July 17, 2016 Branson Missouri (77)

I had no idea who these two guys were when I bought the single. Lo and behold: Skip Batten who would later go on to perform with The Byrds, The New Riders of the Purple Sage and The Flying Burrito Brothers. Flip aka Gary S Paxton (born as Larry Wayne Stevens) got into music production and was responsible for producing Alley Oop and The Monster Mash. He also worked with The Association, Paul Revere and The Raiders, The Four Freshmen and Tommy Rowe. As Skip and Flip, they released two singles.

(Francisco Gomez)
Variedad: Eco Records 905
Mexico City
Francisco ‘Paco’ Gomez Garcia: sax, bass
Francisco Martin Armenta Tornero: trumpet
Cesar Sosa: accordion
Antonio Caudillo: drums
Produced around 1968

First Mexican band to play rock n’ roll with Beatle haircuts before the Beatles did, in the late 1950s. In fact, they recorded a spicy version of She Loves You in 1964.

28. The Fixx: Facing The Wind
(The Fixx)
Phantoms: MCA Records MCA 5507
London UK
Cy Curnin: vocals
Jamie West-Oram: guitar
Adam Woods: drums
Rupert Greenall: keys
Dan K Brown: bass
Produced by Rupert Hine and The Fixx, 1984
Recorded and mixed by Stephen We Tayler and Andrew Scarth at Farmyard Studios, Little Chalfont, Buckinghamshire, England

Sounds a bit like The Police. The band formed in 1979 initially calling themselves The Portraits. As The Fix (with 1 X), they signed with MCA in 1981.  Execs at MCA, worried about the potential drug-user implication of the band's name, insisted on a name change before signing them to the label. So they compromised and were allowed to be The Fixx with two Xs.

29. Robert Fripp: Heptaparaparashinokh
(R Fripp)
League of Gentlemen: Polydor PD 1-6317
London UK
Barry Andrews, organ
Robert Fripp, guitar
Sara Lee, bass
Johnny Toobad, drums
Produced by Robert Fripp, 1981
Recorded by Tony Arnold at Arny's Shack, Parkstone, Dorset UK

Interestingly, my copy of this album has the wrong label on side one. It reads 'Difficult to Cure' by Rainbow with the serial PD 1-6316 - one number before League of Gentlemen, the label for side two. All the songs on the record though are by the League.

The back cover of the album features all their gigs from the album release tour of 1980. It says they played two gigs at the El Mocambo in Toronto June 17 and 18.

John McLaughlin
b. 4 January 1942 Doncaster, West Riding of Yorkshire

He played on Miles Davis' albums In A Silent Way, Bitches Brew  as a member of Davis’ band.  From 1971 – 76 fronted the Mahavishnu Orchestra.  This was JM’s second album but he panned it: On his website he writes: “In 1969, I signed a contract in America for 2 records. First was 'Devotion' that was destroyed by producer Alan Douglas who mixed the recording in my absence.” However the album received great critical reviews. He has lived in Monaco since the late 1980s.

Alan Douglas Rubenstein

Shauf was born in Estevan, SK. This album was shortlisted for the 2016 Polaris Music Prize.

Hailing from rural Saskatchewan, Shauf was a drummer in the Christian pop punk band Captain until 2006. He started releasing solo albums starting in 2009. He moved to Toronto in 2016 and released The Party that same year. He had trouble finding musicians who could play what was in his head so he ended up playing all the instruments on the album. He just released his 7th album, Wilds, in September 2021.

Compilation Produced 1986

Formed in 1984, from the ashes of a couple of post-punk bands by Tristan Garel-Funk . Vocalist Marc Lewis responded to an advert in Melody Maker for a singer and the pair then recruited Liam McGuinness on Bass and John Greville on drums. The band were focused on creating dreamy rock anthems. Consequently, they found that the European market was more aligned to their musical style and they toured abroad extensively. They broke up after the release of their third album in 1993 but have regrouped since 2010.

38. Buck Clayton & Count Basie All-Stars: Blue Goose Special
(Jack Hutton)
Buck Clayton's Canadian Caper: Vibra Records D5-MM-63/2

Jackie Williams: drums
Sir Charles Thompson: piano
Tommy Potter: bass

Produced by Fred Edge, Mike Cassidy and Ewd Ingraham, 1963
Recorded by Bill Dowding live at the Colonial Tavern, Toronto, July 1963

Wilbur Dorsey "Buck" Clayton
b. November 12, 1911 Parsons, Kansas / d. December 8, 1991 NYC (80)

Trumpeter Buck Clayton played briefly in Basie's band before going to Shanghai in the 1930s to play jazz. The Chinese influence on his music never left him! He came back to the States at the beginning of the Sino-Japanese war (1937) and worked as an arranger for numerous jazz outfits. He then toured Europe with Mezz Mezzrow. In the 1950s he recorded the bulk of his output before somehow bringing his band to Toronto where they were recorded this "Canadian themed" album live at the Colonial Tavern in Toronto. Songs included Squid Jiggin' Ground, Allouette, North Atlantic Squadron, Canadian Sunset, Thousand Islands Song, Saskatchewan and Canadian Capers.

The Colonial Tavern on Yonge St. in Toronto had an amazing history. Artists from Gene Krupa to Jeff Healey, Thelonius Monk to BB King, Earl Hines to Oscar Peterson, Big Mama Thornton to Bo Diddley and literally hundreds of others performed there. It operated as a jazz and blues venue from the 1950s through the 70s when it was ripped down. A vacant lot is all that's left.
