Edward Riley Boyd
b. Shelby Miss, November 25, 1914 / d. July 13, 1994 Helsinki, Finland

Boyd was born, as was Muddy Waters, on a Stovall Plantation, near Clarksdale, Mississippi. He moved to the Beale Street in Memphis, in 1936 where he played with his group, the Dixie Rhythm Boys. He made his first recordings under his own name, in 1947. However, unhappy with the racial discrimination he faced in the United States, he moved to Belgium, where he recorded with Peter Green, Mick Fleetwood and John McVie on the album “7936 South Rhodes” in 1968 for Mike Vernon’s Blue Horizon Records.

John Buddy Roberts (aka Buddy Black)
b. Moncton NB July 6, 1935 / d. May 15, 2011 Bowmanville ON (75).

Bud Roberts had been a truck driver and had a song written for him by Stompin’ Tom: it was called “Bud The Spud” but he failed to record it (so Connors did the honours himself!). He had a rocky professional music career, put out a couple of albums and had a few minor hit songs, including Jimmy Simpson’s ‘Alcan Run’. The "Alcan Run" song would later also be recorded by Canadian balladeer Stompin' Tom Connors. “The Longest Run” was very similar in structure and in some ways just as good as The Alcan Run. His only other hit was his own composition called “I’ve Got The Bottle and The Bar Stool”.

An earlier band, Alfie & The Pearlies (featuring Fred and Les) played the St. Catherines area during the 1960s. This album features two incredible virtuosos: Producer Walter Ostanek (Canada’s Polka King) on piano accordion, and Graham Townsend on fiddle.

George Harrison – double-tracked lead vocal, acoustic guitars
Paul McCartney – harmony vocal,  Hammond organ, bass guitar
Ringo Starr – drums
Chris Thomas – piano

Produced by George Martin,  1968
Recorded by Ken Scott at Abby Road Studios, London

The working title for the song was "It's Been a Long, Long, Long Time", There’s a sound near the end of the song which is a bottle of Blue Nun wine rattling away on top of a Leslie speaker cabinet. It just happened. Paul hit a certain note and the bottle started vibrating. We thought it was so good that we set the mikes up and did it again. The Beatles always took advantage of such accidents. John Lennon was dealing with his divorce from Cynthia and missed the sessions.

Edward Mellanson
b. Wolfville, Nova Scotia  July 25, 1938

He started to play the guitar at age seven. When he was fourteen he sang in a rural Nova Scotia minstrel show, backed up by a lady playing a boogie woogie piano. He adapted the rhythm to his guitar and it became the sound of Rockabilly that he would use for the next sixty years. After watching the 1956 release of the movie The Girl Can't Help It , he started his own band called “Eddy M and the Rockabillys”. When Bill Haley and the Comets toured in the Maritimes in 1958, they were selected as the Canadian group to open for them. He toured in the United States, touring with Buddy Knox and The Fendermen. In 1963 he recorded some of his songs at Starday Studios in Nashville.  He was inducted into Nova Scotia Country Music Hall of Fame 2014

Terry Sylvester: vocals, guitar
Tony Hicks: vocals, guitars, banjo, mandolin, bass, sitar, keyboards
Bernie Calvert: bass, keyboards
Bobby Elliott: drums
Produced by Ron Richards and The Hollies, 1972

"Long Dark Road", not released as a single in the UK, was one of the last singles released by The Hollies that charted in the USA. Not much was left of the vintage 60’s group at this stage in their career. Their amazing harmonies were obviously grafted into the singing style of Crosby, Stills and Nash, courtesy of Graham Nash, an original member of the Hollies.

16. Albert King: I Walked All Night Long

45 single bw I've Made Nights By Myself: Bobbin Records 129

John Barbata: drums

Produced by Jefferson Airplane, 1972

Long John Silver was the second last Airplane album before the Airplane dissolved and reformatting in the Jefferson Starship. A very strange sounding album, as if Grace Slick were singing in a box with a stage mic and yet it’s very haunting. Peg-legged Long John Silver is a fictional character and the main antagonist in Robert Louis Stevenson’s novel ‘Treasure Island’.

Leonard Norman Cohen CC
b. September 21, 1934, Westmount, Quebec / d. November 7, 2016 Los Angeles (82)

"Suzanne" was inspired by Cohen's platonic relationship with dancer Suzanne Verdal. Its lyrics describe the rituals that they enjoyed when they met: Suzanne would invite Cohen to visit her apartment by the harbour in Montreal, where she would serve him Constant Comment tea, and they would walk around Old Montreal past the church of Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours, where sailors were blessed before heading out to sea.

The song was on his debut album Songs of Leonard Cohen. Cohen's recording was released as a single in 1968 but did not reach music charts. The song only charted after Cohen's death in 2016. Julie Collins had a big hit with it in 1966. The late Penny Lang told me during an interview that Cohen offered her the song first but she didn’t like the style.

11. Gordon Lightfoot: Long Haired Woman
(G Lightfoot)
Early Lightfoot: AME Records - 7000
Toronto, ON
Gordon Lightfoot: acoustic guitar, vocals
Anita Kerr Singers

Recorded in Nashville TN circa 1962

Gordon Meredith Lightfoot Jr.
b. November 17, 1938 Orillia, ON / d. May 1, 2023 (84) Toronto

The album was released just as Lightfoot signed with Reprise Records just after the release of If You Could Read My Mind. It was basically just a collection of singles recorded in Nashville in 1962. The photo, taken at Mariposa Folk Festival 1970, made the album look like a new Lightfoot record. Not the first bootlegged Lightfoot album though: in 1965 he was recorded performing live at a club in Cleveland resulting in a couple of albums: “Yellow Bird” and “Get Together” released on Koala Records

12. Pink Floyd: Obscured By Clouds

Cobalt ON
Charlie Angus: guitar, vocals
Peter Jellard: fiddle, mandolin, accordion, harmonica, vocals

Al Lamore: drums

Produced by Charlie Angus and Nicolas Tjelios, 2013
Recorded by Nicolas Tjelios at Laurie Aiken’s house, Plainfield ON

The Great Divide is perhaps more than that: it divided the old pre-Charlie NDP Angels from the current one. Recorded in 2013, it was the only Angels’ album released between Hanging Songs 2003 with 2020’s Summer Before The Storm. It was also late-guitarist Dave Patterson’s last album with the band.

Malcolm Young: rhythm guitar, backing vocals
Cliff Williams: bass guitar, backing vocals

Produced by John ‘Mutt’ Lange, 1981
Recorded at Mobile One Studios (in the suburbs of Paris), HIS Studios

The Night of the Long Knives was a June, 1934 purge of Hitler’s political opponents in Nazi Germany. It also refers to several other political coups such as the ‘Treachery of the Long Knives’ which was a massacre of British chieftains by Saxons c. 460. The term was also used to describe a 1962 purge in Britain by Prime Minister Harold Macmillan when he swept away most of his cabinet.

The Canadian equivalent was the repatriation of our constitution in 1982 when Quebec Premier René Levesque was fooled into making a deal which was overturned in the night when he slept in Hull, Quebec while the other Premiers gutted it.
