Paying special focus this week to Canadian singer/songwriter Selina Martin who is promoting her latest album, Time Spent Swimming. Selina lives came to Toronto from the Ottawa Valley around 20 years ago. She’s spent her time honing her craft in various meticulous ways. During the pandemic, she’s been living in France, trying to get the feel of loneliness she requires to form her songs. This album’s been a trans-Atlantic venture, layering and spreading the sound around to perfection.

Truth is: I’ve only got a digital copy, but it’s the one that’s mastered for the vinyl. Since Selina lives in France, sending an LP to me would cost her $50 so we agreed on a compromise.  Look her up online: she’s amazing!

Selina Pauline Martin b. 1967

No Form, takes off from a sonnet by Leonard Cohen, in which he contemplates the blank page waiting for him to fill it up with meaning. "His thing was about talking to his non-existent sonnet, and mine is more turned in on myself," she said.

As good as these records are, they did not prepare me for Time Spent Swimming. It seems as if she’s got to the point where the only reason to record is to make something so special, that it cannot be reproduced in any other way. Like what the Beatles were doing. Music that cannot be played live. I just closed my eyes and was not only transported across space and time, but inside and out, as well. She’s always written great songs but this production is a time piece.

She’ll be performing in Toronto at the Dakota Tavern on April 14. It’s an early show, begins at 6:30ish.

New York State
Tara Nevins – fiddle
Rose Sinclair – accordion
Beverly Smith – guitar
June Drucker – bass
Produced by The Heartbeats - 1989
Recorded by Gary Solomon, Woodstock, NY

Four women from upstate New York. I got to see them perform at Owen Sound’s Summerfolk Festival in 1990. On stage the four of them huddled as closely to one another as humanly possible with their instruments and cement a sound so tight that it made even my wooden feet dance to their music. And that’s sayin’ something! Pole Cat Blues is a traditional piece from their cassette EP which I’ve nearly worn out.

The composer of this song is the same guy who wrote Ashokan Farewell, now considered a folk antham of sorts. Cat Mother’s first album was the only album produced for another band by Jimi Hendrix.

Cat Mother existed between the years 1967 – 77. Toronto Rock and Roll Revival, the historic concert headlined by The Doors, where John Lennon and The Plastic Ono Band appeared in a surprise performance.

Frank Zappa: guitar
Janschi: bass
Vic Mortenson: drums
Produced by Frank Zappa, 1963
Recorded at Studio Z by Frank Zappa, Cucamonga CA
Mixed by Bob Stone and Spencer Chrislu at Utility Muffin Research Kitchen

Zappa and Beefheart were friends since high school. They shared an interest in blues records. Beefheart was especially fond of Howlin' Wolf, with whose raspy and powerful voice he is often compared. Zappa and Beefheart recorded a few songs together in those early years and also in Studio Z in Cucamonga. After Zappa had founded The Mothers, Vliet started his own band ‘The Magic Band’. After recording a couple of non-descript albums, Zappa offered Vliet total artistic freedom on the Zappa produced ‘Trout Mask Replica’, a double album issued on Straight. A double album, it contains some of the best ‘way out there’ jazz recordings of Beefheart’s career.

Tiger Roach was basically just Beefheart rapping to the band. It didn’t really have a theme or a title, but Zappa used the last words Beefheart said for the track’s title.

Don’s songs are little vignettes, usually using humour and irony to arrest our fetid minds from out of their doldrums. I mean, who else would begin a song with “Here’s a song I wrote one day when I was gonna kill my cat…. Coz he peed in my guitar case.”

Eric Bogle: vocals
Produced by Eric Bogle, 1983
Recorded by Peter Brook
Mastered by Roger Seibel at Wakefield MGF

A moggy is a nonpedigree cat and the most common type of domesticated cat. Because they have a big gene pool, they’re usually healthier than pedigree cats.

Eric Bogle is an ace singer/songwriter. Originally from Scotland, he moved down to Australia in the 1970s and has lived there ever since. He ranges from anthemic war songs (And The Band Payed Waltzing Matilda and No Man’s Land) so a cat diddy like this. Just a really funny song.

The Pig and Whistle TV show was recorded at CFTO’s Agincourt studios, beginning mid-1960s and lasted for a decade. The setting featured a fake pub, beer mugs, a bar and a singing publican and bar maid. Special guests used to drop in and sing a song, backed by the energetic house band, The Carlton Showband. It was mostly British music hall oriented stuff. A great show!
