This Vancouver band started out in the later part of the 1960s as a joke, with only one guy who could actually play. Over the next year they put together a real band and released One Ring Jane as a single in the US but it wasn’t promoted. That was when they formed their own Duck Records and recorded their first album featuring a re-recorded version of One Ring Jane. Bonded with the San Francisco music scene, the album did rather well considering it didn’t get much airplay. They went on to tour with the Yardbirds, Alice Cooper, opened for Cream and Deep Purple before calling it quits in the early 1970s.

Margo Timmins b. January 27, 1961 Montreal QC

After graduating from high school, Timmins spent her evenings along with her brother Michael exploring the punk music scene in Toronto that was happening on Queen Street West. When Michael started his first band, the Hunger Project, she would hang out with the band, take the tickets, and carry the equipment.

In 1985, her brother Michael recruited Margo as the vocalist for Cowboy Junkies even though she had never sung publicly before. Initially Margo would not sing in front of the other band members, she would only sing in front of Michael. Eventually, Michael convinced Margo to sing in front of the other band members and they liked her performance.

Margo Timmins has said about that time, "So when he asked me I was freaked out, but I said 'Okay, so long as if I don't do a good job you fire me' I didn't want to hurt his music, because his music is so important to him." It took a long time for her to get comfortable singing in front of an audience. In fact, many of the early shows had Margo singing with her back to the audience. Timmins has stated that it took her ten years to get comfortable singing in front of people, and she suffers from stage fright.

Currently, although living in Toronto, she likes to spend most of her time with her husband and child at her 100-year-old farmhouse in Bluewater Country, Ontario.

This later proved to be controversial and in 2000 composer Colin Matthews was commissioned by the Halle Orchestra to compose ‘Pluto, the Renewer’ to end the suite. A few years later, Pluto was downgraded to dwarf planet status.

In his Book of Rock Lists, rock music critic Dave Marsh calls the B-side the "most obnoxious song ever to appear in a jukebox", saying the recording once "cleared out a diner of forty patrons in two minutes flat."

The Monkees' song "Gonna Buy Me a Dog", sung by Micky Dolenz, features Davy Jones teasing Dolenz toward the fade of the song with the words "they're coming to take us away" taken from Napoleon XIV's song. Jello Biafra covered this song with his band Lard on their album The Last Temptation of Reid in 1990.

Hi Steve. This is Wayne Roworth formerly of It’s All Meat. I was surfing the net the other day and came across one of your vinyl shows and noticing you played one of IAM (It’s All Meat) songs. In the footnotes you commented on playing with me in 1972. I can’t immediately remember it. Sign of old age! Your memory is obviously better than mine. Could you look under the rock in my head and please remind me. TIA. Wayne. P.S. Still writing and playing music.

Hi Wayne great to hear from you.  Ya, we did 2 or 3 gigs with Paul Burton on bass and another guy on second guitar.  We were put together by Ron Clark to play at a curling club. I played drums. You lent me your copy of the IAM lp to learn Self Confessed Lover.

“Thanks for the kind words. I keep in touch with Jed MacKay several times a year. He’s a producer for TV Ontario. We almost had a IAM reunion in NYC 10 years ago but it didn’t pan out. Rick Aston and Norm White died early. Rick McKim is still with us and is still musically active. I’ve been in the USA for almost 35 years mostly in the southeast. Been gigging and recording. Have several albums.

Produced by George Martin, 1963
Recorded on 1 July 1963 at Abby Road EMI Studios, London

This was the first record I ever bought, for 66 cents at Eaton’s Yorkdale in Toronto probably around March, 1964. Actually, this song was the B-side for two Beatles' singles: She Loves You and its German counterpart, Sie Liebt Dich. One of the few Beatles songs without a lead guitar solo in it. It didn't appear on a Beatles album until the Rarities compilation of mostly B-sides was released in 1978.

This was the band that would constitute Steppenwolf in a few years time, pre-John Kay. This was written by the guy who would become Mars Bonfire. Jack London was a Toronto based singer who tried capitalizing on the British Invasion by speaking with a fake British accent and wearing Carnaby Street clothes.

Ray Royer – guitar
David Knights – bass
Bill Eyden – drums

Released May 12, 1967

For some reason, I got to see this band perform live several times in Toronto. The Toronto Pop Festival (1968) and opening for the Moody Blues at Massey Hall, The Rock Pile… And they seemed to have arrived out of nowhere when their first record, ‘A Whiter Shade of Pale’ burst onto the scene in ’67.
