Side A – Another Bunch of Songs

1.   Billy Budd: Guitar Boogie Breakdown
(Cecil McEachern)
The Versatile Sounds of Billy Budd: Big Wheel Records 2911-002
New Brunswick
Billy Budd: electric lead guitar
Produced by Billy Stoltz, 1971

Another week, another show, but rarely is there a show about ‘Another’. The first hour is dedicated to Another to warm us up before boogying the blues on Side B, in hour 2.

The Guitar Boogie Breakdown was written by Cec McEachern, a versatile musician from Prince Edward Island and an indispensible member of Don Messer’s legendary band, The Islanders. Cec was a great guitar player and just as good a fiddler. He wrote many fiddle breakdowns to play on guitar, something that he had to do on Don Messer’s Jubilee. The tune most likely became popular after the 1961 recording by Sudbury-born guitar maestro Al Bruno on his only LP, Town & Country Guitar for Arc Records before moving to the States to become Conway Twitty’s lead guitarist. Many have recorded it since then.

The group took its name from a Bible passage: "Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine ...." meaning: do not give things of value to those who will not understand or appreciate them. PBS was under the influence of The Fugs who directed them to ESP Records in the mid-1960s. On working with the label ESP-Disk, Rapp has said that "We never got any money from ESP. Never, not even like a hundred dollars or something. My real sense is that he (Bernard Stollman) was abducted by aliens, and when he was probed it erased his memory of where all the money was". They then went to Reprise Records and released several albums with them before Tom Rapp went solo in 1972.

2.   Buster Brad Jones: Back Porch Boogie
(Brad Jones)
Floppy Disk EP: Guitar Player Magazine / Soundpage #46
Ames IO
Buster Brad Jones: guitar
Produced by Brad Jones, 1988

Born Bradley F. Jones in Ames, Iowa, he first became known after entering Guitar Player Magazine's International Reader's Soundpage Competition in 1988 on a whim. He submitted an original composition, titled Back Porch Boogie, recorded using a reel-to-reel recorder and then transferred to cassette using a boombox. Jones came in first place out of nearly 900 entries. He went on to win the National Fingerpicking Championship at Winfield, Kansas in 1990.

The first documented use of the word boogie is dated back to 1929. Boogie energy is to get people dancing to the strongly rhythmic music. The earliest association of the word boogie was with blues and later rock and roll and rockabilly. “Boogie-woogie” is a style of piano-based blues that became very popular in the late 1930s and early 1940s.

Boogie rock is a style of blues rock music that developed in the late 1960s. Its key feature is a repetitive driving rhythm, which emphasizes the groove. In 1948, American blues player John Lee Hooker recorded "Boogie Chillen'", an urban electric blues tune derived from early North Mississippi Hill country blues. Hooker's "repeated monochord riff" on guitar was adapted by the American rock group Canned Heat for "Fried Hockey Boogie", first released in 1968 on their “Boogie with Canned Heat” album. Malcolm Young explained its influence on AC/DC:

“The pub scene ... It was like, "Give us a boogie! Give us a boogie!" So everybody played a boogie ... [W]e used to like Canned Heat from way back, and we would just jam on their stuff.”

So let’s boogie: here’s Canned Heat with some great Boogie Music.

This comes from a 2LP album, the second record being the Refried Boogie parts 1 and 2, which takes up the entire record – both sides!

The 1968 album 'Doughnut in Granny's Greenhouse' was released as Urban Spaceman in the US and Canada by The Bonzo Dog Band in 1970. The phrase "the doughnut in granny's greenhouse" is obscure British slang for the loo. Originally called The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band, they came to public attention through a 1968 ITV comedy show, Do Not Adjust Your Set. The band was officially formed on 25 September 1962 after several members bonded after listening to the Sonny Liston / Floyd Patterson championship boxing match. Theodore Roosevelt Taylor b. Natchez Mississippi, April 12, 1915 / d. Chicago Dec 17, 1975 (60)

Around 1970, a young Bruce Iglauer was working as a shipping clerk for a small Chicago blues record label, Delmark, when he first heard Hound Dog Taylor and The Houserockers perform at a Chicago club. The unusual three piece band (Hound Dog’s distorted slide guitar; Phillips’ bass runs played on a normal electric guitar, and the drums of Ted Harvey) had no bass player, were as loud as hell and primitive as possible. Iglauer eagerly ran back to Delmark to persuade them to sign the band, but Delmark balked. Using his own money, Igauer brought the band into a recording studio and at the cost of $900., had them record live, like at a club, no overdubs. He put the record out on his own new Alligator Records label. Taylor brought the hard rocking folk blues to light, recording three raw albums for the fledgling recording company before succumbing to lung cancer in 1975. He was elected to the Blues Hall of Fame in 1984.

Ernest Jennings Ford b. Bristol, Tennessee Feb 13, 1919 / d. Oct 17, 1991 (72) Reston, Virginia

When I was a kid watching I Love Lucy, there was an episode where the guest star was Tennessee Ernie Ford. What a voice he had! While Ford was mostly into bluesy country, it was his gospel recordings that sold incredibly well. What I didn’t know was how much he loved boogie music. In fact, on Sixteen Tons he wrote and recorded several boogies. Shot-Gun Boogie, Catfish Boogie, Smoky Mountain Boogie and Blackberry Boogie and they’re all great. Smokey Mountain Boogie was originally recorded by Ford in 1949.

“A Gypsy mutant industrial vacuum cleaner dances about a mysterious night time camp fire. Festoons. Dozens of imported castanets, clutched by the horrible suction of its heavy duty hose, waving with marginal erotic abandon in the midnight autumn air.”

Perfect ingredients of a very scary vampire bogeyman boogie.
