Produced by Franco Disque, 1971

The song was released as a single in September 23, 1957 by Bill Justis, one of firsts to use the twangy lead guitar effect.  In 1958 a then fourteen-year-old George Harrison performed the song to John Lennon and Paul McCartney on the top deck of a bus, and was so note-perfect Lennon decided to let him into his band, the Quarrymen. Faintaisistes basically means The Whimsicals. They released two albums.

The Esquires were co-founded in the Ottawa Valley in 1962 by Clint Hierlihy and Gary Comeau after playing for several years together in an Ottawa high school band called The Fairmonts (1959-1961). They played their first show at the Rockcliffe Air Base Teen Club. They then landed a performance backing up Andy Kim on ‘Dick Clark’s Caravan of Stars’ in Montréal in a show that also featured Gene Pitney, The Dovells, Paul And Paula, and The Tymes. Several months later, they were introduced to ‘Ottawa Journal’ columnist Sandy Gardiner (who was quoted on the front cover of Beatlemania With The Beatles). Gardiner then contacted Paul White, the young A & R man for Capitol Records Canada, and recommended he listen to a demo tape of the band. White was anxious to have a Shadows-styled act on the label and signed The Esquires who were the first rock act signed by Capitol Records Canada in 1963. Introducing The Esquires is the first rock album ever released by a Canadian act for a major label.

Founded in Paris France by Hector Miranda and his wife Ana Maria in 1960. They went on to record some amazing Andean music on traditional instruments, but their biggest records were La Flute Indienne (1966) which was reprised here with singer Guillermo de la Roca on La Flute Indienne volume 2. They were hired to do the soundtrack of "State Of Siege" the film by Costa Gavras starring Yves Montand and with music composed by Mikis Theodorakis.

Having spent a year in the high Andean countries, I grew to love the music I heard there. When I returned home in 1974, I immediately sped down to Sam The Record Man’s main store on Yonge Street and started buying these records.

Side one of La Flute Indienne Vol 2 has songs from Peru, Ecuador and Bolivia. Side 2 does Argentina, Columbia and Mexico. They were one of DJ John Peel’s favourite acts. Pescadores", a track from the album "La Flute Indienne Vol 1" by the Paris-based Latin band Los Calchakis, which became a favourite of the Night Ride. They were also the first Latin American band to record El Condor Pasa, later used by Paul Simon.

David Pritchard b. Oct. 18, 1944 / d. Toronto Feb 2005 (60)

The First Canadian Artists signed to Island Records. He was an all night DJ on the new CHUM-FM open format radio station which started playing whatever they wanted in Toronto 1968. He was there along with Reiner Schwartz, John Donabie and David Marsden, the deans of Canadian alternative rock DJs when the jockeys actually chose and played the disks.

He rose to prominence in 1968 when he became the late-night man at CHUM-FM, where it wasn't unheard of him to play classical, jazz and electronic records simultaneously on the station's three turntables.

David and Alan Lysaght created two massive radio documentaries covering the complete histories of The Beatles (30 hours long and the most widely syndicated radio series in history) and another on The Rolling Stones. His book, The Beatles: An Oral History, was later published as he became known world-wide as an authority on The Beatles.

According to David Pritchard, Nocturnal Earthworm Stew is ‘An electronic rendering of the night.’ David was a fan of experimental electronic music and also an artist in his own right, releasing the album Nocturnal Earthworm Stew in 1976.

Recorded at Manta Sound, Toronto by John Naslen
Recorded at Inception Sound, Toronto by Jeff Wolpert
Mixed at Manta Sound, Toronto
Mastered by Bernie Grundman at Bernie Grundman Mastering, Hollywood

‘Quirky’ is the best way I can think of describing what Jane Siberry puts down on records. This album starts off with an incredibly fast pace and waiting for Jane to sing, one wonders who she’s going to go about it. But Jane never seems to do anything by the book. She sings in a totally different rhythm, bouncing all around the music and, as quirky as she may get at times, it always seems to work out wonderfully. She influenced many singers with her playful, yet powerful, style.

Side 2 of the album includes Mimi on the Beach, released as a single, but here heard in its 7 plus minute entirety. So refreshing to hear this album even after nearly 40 years since it was recorded.

Arthur Brown is sometimes referred to as a ‘one hit wonder’ for the song “I Am The God of Hell’s Fire”. But Brown was not only a master showman; he was also an incredible interpreter of songs as you can hear on opening track “I Put A Spell On You” and James Brown’s “Money”. And then there was the unique originality of his own songs, put to music by virtuoso keyboardist Vincent Crane who went on to form Atomic Rooster. The album was originally recorded in the UK. Kit Lambert brought the acetates to the US for mixing and original drummer, Drachen Theaker, couldn’t keep time. This is how Arthur Brown describes it:

"We had recorded the whole album with just bass, drums, keyboard, and myself. Kit took it over to America, and Atlantic Records said 'Crazy stuff! But, uh, the drummer can't keep time' ... Kit had recorded it on four-track; he'd recorded the drums and the keyboard on the same track. I said, 'We can't possibly redo it all' so they buried the drums with orchestration. When drummer Drachen Theaker heard the record, he leapt across the room, took it off the turntable, smashed it on the wall." Theaker was replaced by Carl Palmer who would go on to form Atomic Rooster with Vincent Crane and then joined Emmerson Lake & Palmer. The album was Produced by The Who’s Pete Townsend with Kit Lambert.

Mastered by Bob Dorleans

Shortly after the demise of Kensington Market, John Mills-Cockell formed the avant-garde band Syrinx, active from 1970 to 1972. Syrinx initially played the Toronto coffee-house circuit. After a time, Canadian music executive and talent manager Bernie Finkelstein signed the trio to his newly-created True North Records. The CTV television network commissioned a theme song for its forward-looking television series “Here Come the Seventies”. This commission resulted in Mills-Cockell composing Tillicum, which was later released as a single and was included on Syrinx’s second album.

They sounded bubble gum at times, they were certainly hit oriented but this was a great band too. They could rock, they could get psychedelic, they could play and they could mouth the words to their hits on pop TV shows. But they were also a favourite of Frank Zappa, The Beatles, Brian Jones – Jimi Hendrix respected them. Two of them, singers Howard Kaylan and Mark Vollman went on to perform with Zappa’s Mothers of Invention for several years as The Florescent Leech and Eddy.

If you don’t know the musical history of this man, you don’t know about the man who got Canadians to rock. Back in the ‘50s! He recorded numerous albums over the years but none of them quite captured The Hawk’s live shows till this one. Recorded live, in London England, in 1982, The Hawk used a crack back (when didn’t he have a crack band?) that could really play. I have no qualms in saying: This is the way that The Hawk should be listened to. Rockabilly, Rock n’ Roll, Rock music, whatever you wish to call it, it’s one of the foundations of the genre played here by one of the founders of the movement. The fact that he left Arkansas for Ontario is still incredible when you consider that there was nothing much happening here, musically, until The Hawk came and romped the country. Ex-Crowbar member Rheal Lanthier’s guitar shines on this recording, as does the piano playing of Stan Szelest.
