And Now for The Particulars:

Side One

1.   CAN: Moving Right Along
(CAN)
Rite Time: Mercury Records – 838 883 1
Cologne GM
Malcolm Mooney: vocal
Irmin Schmidt: keys
Jaki Liebezeit: drums
Michael Karoli: bass, vocals, pocket organ
Hoger Czukay: french horn, dictaphone, synth, bass
Produced by Michael karoli and Holger Czukay 1989
Recorded by Patrick Jauneaud at Outer Space Studio, Nice FR
Mixed by Michael Karoli, Holger Czukay and Rene Tinner at Can Studio, Weilerswist GM

CAN was a German experimental rock band formed in Cologne in 1968. According to keyboard player, Irmin Schmidt:

When I founded the group I was a classical composer and conductor and pianist making piano recitals, playing a lot of contemporary music but also Brahms, Chopin and Beethoven and everything. And when we got together I wanted to do something in which all contemporary music becomes one thing. I studied Stockhausen but nobody talked about rock music like Sly Stone, James Brown or the Velvet Underground as being contemporary music. Then there was jazz and all these elements were our contemporary music, it was new.

— Schmidt, in a 2004 interview
Around September 1968, the band enlisted the creative, highly rhythmic, but unstable and often confrontational American vocalist Malcolm Mooney, a New York-based sculptor, with whom they recorded the material for an album, Prepared to Meet Thy Pnoom. Mooney made his last recordings with Can in December 1969 before returning to America around the end of the year on the advice of a psychiatrist, having been told that getting away from the chaotic music of Can would be better for his mental health.

2.   The Ceedees: He Plays Guitar
(Curtis Driedger)

Peterborough ON
Curtis Driedger: guitar, keys, vocals
Ed Dick: bass
Nick Kent: drums
Susan Newman: keys, vocal
Rob Fortin: guitar, vocal
Produced by The CeeDees, 1980
Recorded by Glen Johansen at Integrated Studios, Agincourt (Toronto) ON

For most of the 1980s, this band had a good following on the burgeoning Queen Street West music scene in Toronto. This was their only album although they did release a 5 song EP in 1985.  Drummer Nick Kent later went to play with Martha & The Muffins while Curtis Driedger did some work with Lost & Profound.

3.   David Celia: Thin Disguise
(David Celia)

Ariana Gillis: bg vocal
Dave Clark: drums
Dave Headon: bass
Tim Jackson, Liz Abbott: bg vocals
Produced by David Celia 2015
Mastered by Andy Magoffin at The House of Miracles

As far as I’m concerned… David Celia is one of those guys who might be one of those guys who fall under that category of “one of the best unknown talents in town”. An excellent, tasty and unique guitarist who seems to coax just about any sound he wants out of his instrument. He creates a Beatlesque pop from his songs while remaining heavy enough to brand them his own. I’ve followed his career since the release of his first CD, watching him grow and just get even better. His 2015 album was released on vinyl, made in the UK and transported back to Canada in his luggage.

Cogan was born and raised in Toronto, Canada where she began singing with her guitar between sets of her uncle Benny Louis’s Big Band. Moved to Jerusalem, Israel in 1966 where she began singing at the age of 15. In 1970s performed in the duo Susan & Fran, achieved fame with their songs becoming standards in Israel. Cogan moved back to Canada and settled on Salt Spring in the Gulf Islands where together, with producer Paul Brosseau, she created the indie label and recording studio Nomad Music. Newfoundland’s newspaper, The Telegram writes: “She weaves thoughts on potent subjects that leave the listener with a buoyant sense of hope and joy.” With eight recordings to her credit, Susan has gained international exposure, getting airplay in Israel, France, Italy, the USA, and Canada.

A band of Chilean and Greek ex-pats opposing military take-overs of their countries with the establishment of right wing death squads and totalitarian regimes. They were the house band at the Danforth coffee house called The Trojan Horse, established in the early 70’s by poet Gwendolyn MacEwan. When the Trojan Horse closed down, they moved next door to The Lyra. These coffee houses were unlicensed, serving coffees and frappés.

6.   The Crew Cuts: Earth Angel
(Curtis Williams / Jesse Belvin / Gaynel Hodge)
45 single bw Sh-Boom: Mercury Records 30040
Toronto
Rudy Maugeri: lead and baritone
John Perkins: lead and tenor
Ray Perkins: bass
Pat Barrett: lead and tenor
Produced 1958

A song originally recorded by an Afro-American doo-wop group the Penguins in 1954.

Many white artists covered the song, including Gloria Mann, Pat O'Day, and Les Baxter. The most notable of these was performed by a vocal group from here in Canada named the Crew-Cuts, signed to Mercury Records. Their version peaked at number three on the pop charts, higher than the original. Their version also reached British charts, a feat the original was unable to achieve. Elvis Presley recorded an informal cover during an army stint in Goethestrasse, Germany. The other side was also a major hit for the Crew Cuts, Sh-Boom.

Originally known as The Four Lads, the Crew Cuts were playing in a Sudbury, Ontario, night club in a sub-zero Canadian winter when they received notice that they had been invited to appear as a guest on a Cleveland, Ohio television program. They drove 600 miles at -40° temperatures to appear on the Gene Carroll show, where they remained for three appearances. While in Cleveland, they met local disc jockey Bill Randle. On his show, on Cleveland radio station WERE (1300 AM), he coined the name Crew Cuts that would, from that point on, belong to the group. In addition, Randle arranged for them to audition with Mercury Records, who liked them enough to sign the quartet to a contract.

Recorded by Geoff Rowland at SRS Studios, London ON

Singer Bobby Watt had been trained as a stone mason in his native Scotland before moving to Canada where he took a job with the Toronto Police force as a diver. A dozen years of that and he wanted to do music full time. Meanwhile, his band, Cromdale, recorded a couple of interesting celtic albums before he went solo. In the late 1990s he decided to move to Ottawa and start a stone mason school. He has restored buildings in the US, Cuba and did the parliament buildings in Ottawa. Sure miss hearing his voice. Bobby even made Eagle’s songs sound good.

Paul Simon said he wrote "Red Rubber Ball" while living in England to get a £100 advance from The Seekers. The Seekers also recorded "Red Rubber Ball" for their 1966 album Come the Day (Georgy Girl). In Canada, the Cyrkle version of the song displaced Paperback Writer to reach number one. Also recorded by Cilla Black, Mel Torme, Neil Diamond and Cliff Richard.

These guys were an electrifying act to see live. They played the Rock Pile here in Toronto in 1968 and blew me away. I immediately went out and bought two of their albums. Mostly known for their pop hit “Time Will Come”, they were a great r&b band, incredibly tight and to top it off: really nice guys! I met them in a record shop on Yonge St. as a young teen.

Producer Mario Forest was also involved in the band’s formation. Since then they have recorded a lot of albums and still continue (without the services of any of the original members) as Quebec’s answer to traditional music played with a four piece horn band.

They have had 17 past members and currently include 11. One of the most remarkable and fascinating traditional bands from Quebec. This track, from a 45 single, was recorded towards the ending of the bands first phase and for the first time included piano and contrabass. After this the jazz horns would become a huge part of their transformation.

Originally from Montreal, Quebec, Les Classels were formed in 1962 when these five school chums formed a band called The Specialtones. As a gimmick they dyed their hair white, wore matching white suits and white instruments.

They made the rounds playing Quebec clubs and road houses as one of many bands in the growing 'Ye Ye' fad of re-inventing English pop hits as French language songs.

By 1964 they recorded a single called "Avant de Me Dire Adieu" which topped the charts in Quebec especially in St. Jean where they had a large following. As starstruck teen sensations, the Montreal newspapers were dubbing them The Quebec Beatles. Les Classels would be the first band in Quebec to receive certified gold records for their music.

By 1970 they had dropped the white hair and suit gimmick but still wore matching pastel blazers and released several more singles in French including a version of the Guess Who's "These Eyes".
