(Mars Bonfire)
Born To Be Wild: Birchmount Records (mono) BM 515
Edmonton AB?

No idea who was in this band
Produced by Ray Schwartz, 1969
Recorded by Barry Allen

Incredibly rare recording  very little known about this band but remember, that there are other bands out there with the same name. One, from Burlington ON, was called The Rising Suns but they disbanded by ‘68. Because of Mary Saxton and Barry Allen’s involvement with the album it might have something to do with Edmonton.

4.   David Clayton-Thomas & The Shays: Born With The Blues
(David Clayton Thomas / Tom Collacott)
Back On The Street Again: Pickwick (Capitol) Records (mono) SPC-3245
Toronto

David Clayton-Thomas: vocals

The Album Production not listed circa 1972

David Henry Thomsett b. 3 September 1941 Kingston upon Thames, Surrey UK

This LP is a joint LP: Side 1 DCT Side 2: Linda Ronstadt & Stone Poneys.
Thomas recorded several singles w Shays on Atca and Roman records between 1964 and 65. The Shays were an excellent Yonge Street band, rivaling Ronnie Hawkins and the Hawkes with Thomas as lead vocalist. In late 65 he left to form The Bossmen with
jazz pianist Tony Collacott and
Domenic Troiano in a band that would become the foundation of Mandala. After 1966 Thomas moved to New York to play with John Lee Hooker and eventually emerged fronting Blood Sweat and Tears.

The Shays were together for about 3 yrs.

Belfast, Northern Ireland

Rory Gallagher, vocals, guitar

This is vintage Rory Gallagher, already fully developed by the time he recorded his first album with Taste. A wonky production of this song but it rocks!

Birrel Josef Mendelson b. Toronto July 30, 1944

Mr. Joe has recorded some fine albums since leaving Mainline in the early 70s. But this one was one of the best! Utilizing the incredible violin playing of Ben Mink and Production wizard Colin Linden, who also supplies bass and guitart, the real stars on this album (other than Joe) are the Shuffle Demons. That's what sets this one apart.

8.   Hugh Marsh: How The Violin Was Born
(Jerome Rothenberg, lyrics; Hugh Marsh / Jon Goldsmith / Kerry Crawford)

Hugh Marsh b. June 5, 1955 Montreal, Quebec

Marsh has played with Bruce Cockburn, FM, kd lang, Loreena McKennitt, Chalk Circle and many others. It isn't surprising then that he would have Cockburn do a recitation on this piece, backed by musicians from Cockburn's '80s band: Fergus Marsh on Chapman Stick (Bass), Rob Pilch on guitar and Jon Goldsmith on keys. Apart from that are some of the Shuffle Demon horns: Perry White and Mike Murley.

He recorded to 2 LPs of his own

These guys were part of sounds of the summer of 1972. The first white band on the Motown label to score massive hits. The version of their biggest hit song, Get Ready, takes an entire side of this double album release.

11. The Byrds: Wasn’t Born To Follow

Gary Usher: Moog synthesizer, percussion, backing vocals
Barry Goldberg: organ
Jim Gordon: drums
Produced by Gary Usher, 1968
Recorded at Columbia Studios, Los Angeles

A second Goffin–King composition, "Wasn't Born to Follow", also displays country and western influences, albeit filtered through the band's psychedelic and garage rock tendencies. The song's country leanings are underscored by the criss-crossing musical dialogue between the electric guitar and pedal steel. The rural ambiance is further heightened by the striking imagery of the lyrics which outline the need for escape and independence: a subject perfectly in keeping with the hippie ethos of the day.

Los Angeles CA

John Kay: lead vocals, rhythm guitar, harmonica
Michael Monarch: lead guitar, backing vocals
Rushton Moreve: bass, backing vocals
Goldy McJohn: keyboards, backing vocals
Jerry Edmonton: drums, backing vocals
Produced by Gabriel Mekler, 1968
Recorded by Richard Polodor and Bill Cooper at American Recording Co

Written by Dennis Edmonton, who went by the name of Mars Bonfire after moving to California, he was an original member of The Sparrow before they transformed themselves into Steppenwolf. It was their third single and first hit after moving to California. BTBW and The Pusher were used in the 1969 counterculture cult film Easy Rider (Dennis Hopper and Peter Fonda). Because of that, Born To Be Wild became a song of choice for motorcycle gangs and films.

Stephen J Foote b. Saint John NB Jan 9, 1938 / d. October 2016 Saint John NB

Unlike the hard rock miners of Ontario and Quebec, maritime based miners had to endure working in the coal fields. We've all heard of the tragedies of Westray Mine in 1992 killing 26 men. And the Springhill Mining Disasters of 1891, 1956 and 1958, the latter of which was immortalized in song by Peggy Seeger and Ewan Macoll. New Brunswick had a big coalfield in the Minto area; Nova Scotia had coal in Cape Breton; coal dust sparkled through many a maritimer's veins. Dedicated from me to Ossie Branscomb, of Minto, who ran the Country Music Store on the Danforth for years: a Toronto institution of its time.
