Noel John Christopher Harrison b. London UK 29 Jan 1934 / 19 Oct 2013 Exeter, Devon UK (79)

Someone in the UK just tweeted the good news: he found an old Noel Harrison LP. What he didn’t know was that Harrison, The Girl From Uncle’s sidekick, had moved to Halifax in 1972 and hosted a TV  show called Take Time for CBC. In winter 1974, the wood stove caught fire and his house burned down, inspiring him to write the humorous song, "The Middleton Fire Brigade", which appeared on his 1979 album Mount Hanley Song. He subsequently built a new house from scratch with no electricity. He returned to England in 2004 and died from a heart attack at his home in Devon  in 2013 after performing at a local concert. Mount Hanley Song was the last album he released until 2003. The cover was painted by the album’s producer, Mendelson Joe.

What my friend on Twitter did know was that Noel was the son of actor Rex Harrison and had a big hit song in 1968 called  "The Windmills of Your Mind". He was also on the British Olympic Ski Team in the 1950s.

3.   Lisa Dal Bello: Pretty Girls

Lisa Dal Bello born 22 May 1959, Weston ON

Changed her stage name to just Dalbello in 1984. When she was 17, Dalbello's self-titled debut album in 1977, produced by David Foster, won her a 1978 Juno Award for Most Promising Female Vocalist of the Year. Despite her win, however, MCA dropped her from the label because the album's production had been too expensive. She formed her own label, Talisman Records, to release her second album Pretty Girls, and received her second Juno nomination in 1979 in the category of Female Vocalist of the Year

4.   Les Aristos: Ton visage maquillé de joie (Message To Pretty)
(Arthur Lee)

Sherbrooke QC
Alain Robert: guitar
Donald Bélanger: organ, vocals

Originally known as The Aristoscrates, they performed for a year and a half (1965-1966) on a TV program entitled: “Un..deux..trois..Aristos” out of Sherbrooke. In 1966, they had their greatest success with the Arthur Lee (Love) song “Message to Pretty". The following year, the group changed its name to that of the Aristos but broke up in 1968

Toronto ON
Mike McKenna: electric guitar
Joe Mendelson: vocal, harmonica, acoustic guitar
Dennis Gerrard: bass
Tony Nolasco: drums
Produced by John Irvine, 1968
Mastered bt Spectrum Stereo Services

These demos were recorded in September 1968, just a few weeks after the band was formed thus became Canada's first "major label" act to be the victim of a bootlegged album. Although it was recorded a year earlier, this album was released after their official first major label album, Stink. Producer, John Irvine, was the same guy who first signed Stompin’ Tom Connors to the Rebel Records label. Connors claimed in his
autobiography, that Irvine was a rip-off artist.

I know Joe hates it coz it sounds so raw, but over 50 years later it still sounds like a band just wailing out its rockin’ blues.

6.   Mac Beattie & Ottawa Valley Melodiers: Pretty As A Queen
(Mac Beattie)
Mr. Ottawa Valley: Banff / Rodeo - SBS 5333
Arnprior, ON
Mac Beattie: cocktail drum, vocal
Reg Hill: fiddle
Gaetan Fairfield: guitar
Jim Mayhew: piano
Gordon Summers: lead guitar
George Courschesne: bass
Produced by Ralph Carlson, 1970

John McNab Beattie, b Arnprior, ON 21 Dec 1916 / d 14 Jun 1982 Arnprior (65)

Although recorded on one of Mac’s later albums, Pretty As A Queen was one of his first compositions. Mac was originally a singing washboard player who later switched to playing a cocktail drum: one of those tall floor toms with snares and a bass drum pedal at the bottom. The unusual timing in his singing was because he learned to sing logging songs a capella and never really played a keyboard or guitar. That, along with his Ottawa Valley accent, made him unique in a lot of ways. He also wrote and recorded his own songs, most of which were about the Ottawa Valley and other parts of Canada that Mac knew of first hand. He was also a goaltender with great prospects when the war broke out in 1939 while playing for the Nanaimo Clippers.

Billy Kell: guitars, vocals
Dave Harwood: bass
Pat Kell: mandolin, jugband stuff, percussion
Barb Payne: fiddle, percussion
James Kell: drums
Produced by Terry Regan, 1973
Recorded by George Semkiw, Toronto

This band consisted of family and friends from Perth County, Ontario. They released two decent albums in the 1970s of a variety of styles, from fiddle tunes to Cajun music, kids songs and blues. I think there’s even a drum solo on one of the albums. They signed with MCA for their next album release in 1974, produced by Gary Buck, but it failed to chart so they broke up the band.

11. Denis et Les Panthères: Pretty Woman
(Roy Orbison / Bill Dees)
Collection de chanson rares des groupes des annés 60, Vol 13: Les introuvables
Montreal

Denis Spiros Pantis b. Montreal 1942

Canadian singer, songwriter, manager, producer and record company executive from Montréal born 1942. Pantis was the largest producer of Quebec groups in the 1960s. He not only owned a fairly incredible number of record labels during the 1960s (Jeunesse Franco, Télédisc, Blue Jean, Citation, DSP, lark!), but today it has almost 80% of the master ribbons aka masters of everything recorded in Quebec between 1950 and 1970

12. Pretty Green: Hand And The Hammer

Ed Blocki: vocals, guitar, bass, mandolin
Peter Bourne: drums, percussion
Chris Stevens: banjo
Anne Bourne: cello
Produced by Ed Blocki and Greg Reely, 1987
Recorded at Howe Sound, Vancouver by Greg Reely

A band lead by singer / songwriter Ed Blocki who, sadly, only released this one album. Featuring the cello playing of Anne Bourne on some tracks, it’s an atmospheric Bob Dylan and The Byrds concoction doing Tom Petty. If that makes any sense!

Steve Martin Caro: vocals
Rick Brand: guitar
Produced by Harry Lookofsky, 1966
Released February 1967
Recorded at World United Studios & Mercury Studios, New York City between 1965-66

After the massive success of Walk Away Rene and Pretty Ballerina, the Left Banke recorded one more album (and another reformed album in 1978). After The Left Banke broke up, Tom became a successful club and party DJ.

Finn and Left Banke drummer/singer George Cameron re-formed the group with a new lineup of musicians and played a series of reunion shows in 2011 and 2012.  He was the last surviving member of the band. Of The Left Banke's "Walk Away Rene" lineup. Keyboardist Michael Brown died in March 2015, George Cameron passed away in June 2018, and lead singer Steve Martin Caro died this past January.

Recorded by the band in their home studio, Brondesbury Road, London

Judith Aileen Dyble b. 13 February 1949 London, England / d. 12 July 2020 (71)

Her first band was Judy and The Folkmen (1964 - 1966). They made homemade demo recordings, none of which were ever released. She then became the original vocalist with Fairport Convention from 1967 to 1968. Fairport's early live shows in London in the late 1960s saw Dyble share stages with the likes of Jimi Hendrix and the Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd. Dyble sang on The Incredible String Band's 1968 album ‘The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter’.  After her stint with Fairport, Dyble joined Giles, Giles and Fripp by advertising in the Melody Maker magazine. It was thru her that they met Ian Mcdonald who introduced them to Pete Sinfield. Dyble sang on some of their demo recordings but left after her relationship with McDonald ended. By early 1969, Michael Giles and Robert Fripp – retaining the services of Ian McDonald and adding Greg Lake – would become King Crimson.

In 1973, Dyble left the music business to work with her husband, DJ Simon Stable (who played bongos for Ten Years After as Count Simon de la Bédoyère). Later on, Dyble (by now a mother) worked as a librarian. It wasn’t until the early 2000s that she started releasing albums of her own songs. The gates opened and there was a deluge of material.

3.   Giles, Giles & Fripp: Passages of Time
(Robert Fripp)
The Brondesbury Road Tapes: Vinyl Lovers Records 900693
Winbourn - Bournemouth , Dorset UK / London
Judy Dyble: lead vocal
Peter Giles: bass
Michael Giles: drums
Robert Fripp: guitar
Ian McDonald: rhythm guitar, piano, bg vocals
Produced by Giles, Giles & Fripp, 1968
Recorded by the band in their home studio, Brondesbury Road, London
Recorded 1968 in front room of 93a Brondesbury Road NW6 on a Revox F36 Stereo tape recorder, sure mics, a mixer, headphones.
First produced commercially 2001

The Giles Bros, Michael and Peter, began playing in Bournemouth 1961 in several local bands that played 1,134 gigs in 7 yrs time in Trendsetters who backed Bo Diddley, The Drifters, Gene Vincent etc & recorded some unsuccessful 45s. In 1967 they started up a new group with the idea of seeking out a keyboardist. They put an ad in a local paper but got Robert Fripp instead. They then moved to London where they rented a house, got day jobs, and practiced. They made this home recording in 1968 and asked singer Judy Dibble (ex Fairport Convention) to come to 93a Brondesbury Rd to record with them.

Judy told me that the band used boom mic stands with carpets and blankets slung over them to create baffles for the recording of this album. It was a very vivid memory for her.

Giles, Giles and Fripp spent a year writing & recording but never gigged as a band
They later released their only studio album November 68: The Cheerful Insanity of…

Robert Joseph Farnon b. Toronto ON July 24, 1917 / d. St Peter Port, Guernsey April 23, 2005

Farnon was commissioned as a captain in the Canadian Army and became the conductor/arranger of the Canadian Band of the Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force sent overseas during World War II. At the end of the war Farnon decided to make England his home, and he later moved to Guernsey in the Channel Islands. He was considered by his peers to be the finest music arranger in the world. In 1996 he won the Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Arrangement for "Lament" performed by J. J. Johnson & his Robert Farnon Orchestra. He was also awarded the Order of Canada early in 1998.

Farnon also wrote the music for more than forty motion pictures, including Captain Horatio Hornblower R.N. (1951), Gentlemen Marry Brunettes (1955), The Road to Hong Kong (1962). He wrote other music for many, mostly British, television series including Secret Army (1977–79), and A Man Called Intrepid (1979). He worked with Frank Sinatra, Sarah Vaughan, Tony Bennett and Lena Horn.

Victor L. Schertzinger (b. Mahanoy City, PA April 8, 1888 – d Hollywood CA October 26, 1941) was an American composer. His two best-known songs are "I Remember You" and "Tangerine", both with lyrics by Johnny Mercer, the guy who co-founded Capitol Records.

Pat’s Greatest Hits: Dot Records DLP 3071
Jacksonville FL
Pat Boone: vocals

Charles Eugene Boone b. June 01, 1934 Jacksonville, FL

In the late 1950s, Pat Boone was the second most successful artist in record sales, trailing Elvis by selling over 45 million records. He was known for always wearing white bucks. He was the alter-Elvis, a good boy with good looks, Christian values and Republican through and through; he even supported Barry Goldwater’s presidential bid in 1964. Boone promoted conspiracy theories about Barack Obama's citizenship and religion, claiming that Obama was born in Kenya, is fluent in Arabic, and is a Muslim who "hasn't celebrated any Christian holidays in the White House." He went on to host a TV variety show The Pat Boone Show (1967-68). Interestingly, he hosted Pink Floyd’s first US TV appearance where Syd Barrett refused to mouth the words or play his guitar leaving Pat just a little bit flustered.

9.   Vincente Gómez Quintet: Blood And Sand (Torero)

Vincente Gómez b. Madrid, Spain, July 8, 1911 / d. December 23, 2001

Gómez began his career in Spain when he was still a teen. He got so popular over there that he was brought to the attention of the great pianist Arthur Rubinstein who encouraged him to embark on an international career. As the Spanish civil war erupted, he was a loyalist opposed to fascist dictator Gen. Franco and his return to Spain would have put him in danger of imprisonment. Instead, he took refuge in France, then accepted bookings in Cuba and Mexico (1936). Gómez was eventually invited to contribute some "background" music for the 20th Century-Fox film, Blood and Sand starring Tyrone Power and Rita Heyworth (1938). He played in that motion picture flamenco & classical guitar. He became a US citizen in 1943. Singer / Actor Ricky Nelson was one of Gómez’s prized students.

A Neil Yonge song by the Byrds. I only have the 10 minute version by Neil so I chose to play The Byrds instead. Hope Neil forgives me for this transgression. This Byrd’s album was The Byrds re-united with all original members and really flopped. They never did that again!
