And Now for The Particulars:

Hour One

1.   Chris Hillman: Such Is The World That We Live In (Chris Hillman / Steve Hill)
Bidin’ My Time: Rounder Records 1166100250
Los Angeles CA
Chris Hillman: mandolin, lead vocal
Herb Pederson: acoustic guitar, harmony vocal
John Jorgenson: lead acoustic guitar
Gabe Witcher: fiddle
Mark Fain: upright bass
Produced by Tom Petty, 2017
Recorded by Ryan Ulyate at The Clubhouse, LA; Shoeline Recorders, Malibou
Mastered by Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering

This is a wonderful album from ex-Byrd, Burrito Brother, his first album in over a decade. It shows a mature musician in total control of his art. And combined with the ears and ideas of Tom Petty, just before he died, it feels totally up to date and yet dated. Just perfect.

2.   Chris Hadfield: Ride That Lightning (Dave Hadfield / Chris Hadfield)
Space Sessions – Songs From A Tin Can: Warner Music Canada 1-045747
Sarnia ON
Chris Hadfield: vocal
Don Kerr: drums, percussion
Alfi Jurvanen: bass
Mike O’Brien: acoustic guitar, bg vocal
Carlin Nicholson: bg vocal
Ben Lester: percussion
Jay McCarrol: piano
Produced by Robbie Lackritz, 2015
Recorded from the International Space Station by Paul Mills
Recorded on Earth at a studio in Toronto
Mastered by Emily Lazar at The Lodge

The Hadfield brothers. Chris, the astronaut, and Dave, the Air Canada pilot. Both write and sing songs about aviation and riding rockets into outer space. Chris is the first human being to record an entire album of songs from the International Space Station. In 1997 his brother Dave, who lives up in Barrie Ontario, brought Chris onto my show as he was preparing for his second (of three) mission, this time to the ISS which included a space walk. Dave’s cut comes from a CD he just released about flying in 2018. I’ve got Chris’s album on vinyl to make up for that.

3.   Dave Hadfield: Space Station Blues (Dave Hadfield)
Climbing Away: no label or serial
Barrie On
Dave Hadfield: DADGAD rhythm guitar, vocal
Stuart Steinhart: bass
Ian Ross: lead guitar
Steven K Henry: drums
Produced by Dave Hadfield, 2018
Recorded & Mastered at Cutting Edge Studios, Barry by Gary Long.

4.   Jimi Hendrix Experience: You Got Me Floating (J Hendrix)
Axis: Bold As Love: Reprise Records 6281
Seattle WA / London UK
Jimi Hendrix: guitar, vocal, piano, recorder, glockenspiel
Mitch Mitchell: drums, bg vocals
Noel Redding: bass
Trevor Burton: bg vocal
Roy Wood: bg vocal
Produced by Chas Chandler and Eddie Kramer, 1967
Recorded by Eddie Kramer at Olympic Studios, London

5.   Goddo: Shooting Stars (Greg Godovitz)
Pretty Bad Boys: Attic Records LAT 1120
Scarborough (Toronto) ON
Greg Godovitz: bass, lead vocal
Doug Inglis: drums, vocal
Gino Scarpelli: guitars, vocals
George Semkiw: piano
Produced by Thomas Morley-Turner and Bob Segarini, 1981
Recorded by Brian Mitchell, Bob Cobban and Dave Rose at Studio 306, Toronto
Mixed at Amber Studio, Toronto by George Semkiw, Ed Stone and Paul Bonish

Having been a member of successful Canadian band Fludd, Greg Godovitz decided that it was time to form his own band Goddo in 1975. He used Gino Scarpelli from Brutus and Doug Inglis. This was their best received album but due to financial difficulties, Attic Records dropped them.

6.   Peter Green: Seven Stars (Peter A Green)
In the Skys: Attic / Snail Records LAT 1077
London UK
Peter Green: vocals, lead guitar, rhythm guitar
Kuma Harada: bass guitar
Reg Isadore: drums
Produced by Peter Vernon-Kell, 1979
Recorded at Lansdowne, Morgan, Vineyard, Rampart and Advision Studios

After leaving the Fleetwood Mac in 1970, Peter went through very difficult times, totally withdrawing from the music industry. After being institutionalized, with his family in control of his assets, he came cautiously back and produced this album, the first of six that he would release under his own name between 1979 and 1984.

7.   If: Shadows and Echoes (Grigson / Busby)
If2: Capitol Records EMI SW 676
London UK
John Mealing: keys
Terry Smith: guitars
Jim Richardson: bass
Dennis Elliot: drums
Dick Morrissey: reeds
JW Kodkinson: vocal, percussion
Dave Quincy: reeds
Produced by Lew Futterman, 1971
Recorded by John Child at The Hit Factory, NYC and by Frank Owen at Island Studios, London

These guys used to pack them in wherever they played but it never caught on with the record buying public. They released several albums between If (one) in 1970 and 1975. Really underground and groundbreaking at the same time.

8.   JoBoxers: Not My Night (Wayne / Bostock / Collard)
Like Gangbusters: RCA Victor AFL1-4847
London UK
Dig (Timothy Wayne Ball) Wayne: vocals
Sean McLusky: drums
Christ Bostock: bass
Robert Marche: guitar
Dave Collard: keys
Produced by Alan Shacklock, 1983
Recorded by Mike Pala

After playing in New York bands, Dig Wayne went to England and met up with former members of Subway Sect, a punk band and called themselves JoBoxers. This album features all of their hit songs, and they had quite a few of them, but this song wasn’t one of them. Keyboardist Dave Collard later joined The The after the disillusion of JoBoxers in 1985.

9.   Oscar Peterson Trio: Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars (Corcovado)
We Get Requests: Verve MIJ-1-5321

He also belongs to the Juno Awards Hall of Fame and the Canadian Jazz and Blues Hall of Fame. In 2013, Peterson was inducted into Canada's Walk of Fame. He was made an Officer of the Order of Canada (the country's highest civilian state order for talent and service) in 1972, and promoted to Companion of the order (the highest degree of merit and humanity), in 1984. 10. King Crimson: The Night Watch (Robert Fripp / John Wetton / Palmer-James)
Starless And Bible Black: Atlantic Records SD 7298

Robert Fripp: guitar, mellotron, devices
David Cross: violin, viola, keys
John Wetton: bass, vocals
William Bruford: drums, percussion
Produced by King Crimson, 1974
Recorded at AIR Studios, London by Peter Henderson

No band created the moods that King Crimson consistently did, bringing listeners into the dark twisting worlds of poetry. Even their instrumental numbers created that sort of space. A deeply inner space!

11. Crash Vegas: Sky (M McAdorey / C Cripps)
Red Earth: Risque Disques 17 0771
Toronto ON
Colin Cripps: guitars, dobro, mandolin
Jocelyne Lanois: bass
Michelle McAdorey: lead vocals
Ambrose Pottie: drums
Sammy Vegas: lead guitar
Malcolm Burn: keys
Produced by Malcolm Burn, 1989
Recorded by Malcolm Burn and Mark Howard at ESP, New Orleans
Mastered by Greg Calbi at Sterling Sound, NYC

Crash Vegas formed in 1988 and disbanded in 1996. They were the brainchild of Michelle McAdorey and Blue Rodeo’s Greg Keelor who, due to Blue Rodeo commitments, left the band and was replaced by Colin Cripps. Jocelyne Chantal Lanois is a Canadian musician, bass player and songwriter from Hull, Quebec, who has been a member of the bands Martha and the Muffins and Crash Vegas. She has also had touring stints as bass player with Ani DiFranco and Chris Whitley, and played on Sarah McLachlan's album Solace. She is the sister of record producer Daniel Lanois. Lanois left the band on acrimonious terms after the release of Red Earth and their label Risque Disque went bankrupt, leaving the band in limbo. McAdorey was the niece of the late Canadian television and radio personality Bob McAdorey. She now lives near Peterborough and recently released a new album.

Jorma Kaukonen: lead guitar, vocals
Papa John Creach: electric violin
John Barbata: drums
Produced by Jefferson Airplane, 1972
Recorded by Don Gooch at Wally Heider Studios, San Francisco

Long John Silver was the second last Airplane album before dissolving and reformatting in the Starship years. A very strange sounding album, as if Slick were singing from a stage mic and yet still very haunting.

2.  Lovin’ Spoonful: Blues In The Bottle (Trad)
Do You Believe In Magic: Kama Sutra Records DKP 8050 (C)
NYC
Joe Butler: drums, bg vocals
Steve Boon: bass
John Sebastian: guitar, autoharp, vocals
Zal Yanovsky: electric guitar, vocals

At the very beginning, from their first lp which included several traditional songs. Here’s one captured in its raw form, a specialty of the Spoonful. John Sebastian’s autoharp cutting triplets through the refrain.

Winnipeg MB
Randy Bachman: guitar
Burton Cummings: keys, vocals
Gary Peterson: drums
Jim Kale: bass
Produced by Jack Richardson, 1970
Recorded by Brian Christian at RCA Mid-America Recording Center, Studio B, Chicago

The gem out of the Guess Who catalogue, IMHO, is American Woman. Great album from start to finish and the last Guess Who album to feature the guitar playing of Randy Bachman who would soon leave to form Brave Belt and then BTO.

6.   James Gang: Madness (Dominec Troiano / Roy Kenner)

Roy Kenner and Dominec Troiano, veterans of the Toronto R&B scene, moved to the States and started a new band called Bush with Prakash John and Pentti Glan. After releasing one album, they were toast as The James Gang made an offer to Dom and Roy to join their band at the height of its success. They recorded two albums with The James Gang before Troiano left (but Kenner stayed put for another two albums).

After moving to Los Angeles and working with several future rock stars, Taylor joined Canned Heat in 1967 and became the anchor that held the bottom end together for their boogie music. After a dispute, he left Canned Heat in 1970 and was quickly recruited by John Mayall who was forming a new Bluesbreakers band after re-locating from England to Laurel Canyon, California. William Rory Gallagher b. March 2, 1948, Ballyshannon IR / d. London UK, June 14, 1995 (aged 47)

This was from Rory’s second solo album after the break-up of Taste. In order to capture the feeling of a live performance that Gallagher wanted, he would try and record immediately before or after live performances. Didn’t matter anyway since Deuce didn’t sell very well.
