One of the early songs written by Charlie Angus. Originally performed by the Grievous Angels during their formative stage at the Spadina Hotel circa 1987 but never recorded by them. This version by Andrew Cash was the basis for Charlie’s first royalty cheque! It’s a dark, foreboding story of a townie who came to Toronto during the punk days and never went home alive. The recording features drummer Peter Duffin who, along with Cash and Angus were the mainstays behind proto-punk band L’etranger. Cash was the first Canadian artist signed to the prestigious Islands Records label.

The Dimensions got together in 1965 and were managed by Bernie Finkelstein, (future president of True North Records and Bruce Cockburn's longstanding manager). The band changed name to A Passing Fancy in January 1966 when Finkelstein left to take over the management of The Paupers. This was the B Side of their first single and only real major hit song I’m Losing Tonight. The following year their management – Wall-Don – decided to fire Jay Telfer which lead to the other members quitting. Wall-Don then put together a totally different band using the same name.

Bass player Rick Mann changed his name back to Richard Fruchtman and played bass with Whiskey Howl, a seminal Canadian blues band, from 1970 to 1972. He then freelanced and played with Dan Aykroyd, Gilda Radner, Paul Shaffer, Doug Henning, The Diamonds, Doug Kershaw, Dan Hill, Richard Newell (aka King Biscuit Boy), Tony Kosinec, String Band.

Bernie Early’s song writing has always been there and was one of the reasons why, during the 1950s, MGM Records signed him for a five year contract when he was only 19. He left Cornwall and started touring the States with the biggest stars in the rockabilly era. His first big hit was in 1958.

“MGM put out the song ‘Rock Doll’, which sold over a million [copies],” says Bernie in an interview with Famous Last Words. “Unfortunately, my manager got in a fight with them and got off of MGM, which really made me mad! That was about it, and I never got paid for nothing. I called up MGM [regarding the payment] and they said talk to your manager and then hung up on me, so that was the last I heard from them. I never got paid.”

He made his first recording, of his own song "Paper in My Shoe," in 1954. The record was a regional hit, subsequently acknowledged as a zydeco standard, but Chavis was convinced that it was more successful than the record companies claimed, later saying: "I got gypped out of my record. I get frustrated, sometimes. I love to play, but, when I get to thinking about 1955... They stole my record. They said that it only sold 150,000 copies. But, my cousin, who used to live in Boston, checked it out. It sold over a million copies. I was supposed to have a gold record." Chavis lost trust in the music business, and over the next thirty years only released three more singles. He regained his trust in the business in the 1980s when he recorded several albums for Rounder Records. He was inducted into the Zydeco Hall of Fame in 1998.
