The end of the 19th century saw a continuous exodus of Acadians who left behind peasant life in search of wealth and fortune, further south

Beginning in 1975, the band was originally called Lougarou, but had to change its name after being sued by a dance troup named Les Loups-garous. The group became popular not only in Quebec but across Canada, with its rock sound and its lyrics taken from French and French Canadian traditional songs.

Ed Stasium is an American record producer and engineer who has worked on albums by the Ramones, Talking Heads, the Smithereens and Living Colour.

Eddie Coffey was born and raised in the Placentia Bay Community of Cuslett, NL. As a teenager, he heard some of the finest traditional music of the Cape Shore area and recalls people coming to their house on weekends to hear his mother play accordion. Eddie soon became part of the Cape Shore music. At 18, he went to Labrador to work in the Wabush mines for two years. After moving to Toronto in the mid-70s he released his first single, Sweet Forget Me Not. It outsold all other local records for that year.

Toivo Kurmet b. Tallinn, Estonia

Under the Soviet regime, his music was discriminated against for 12 years. He wrote 300 songs and was forbidden to perform them in his country. He married a Swede and emigrated to her country. This was the first piece of music that he wrote in freedom: To The People of the Earth - With Love.

Formed 1971 in Halifax. The Barkhouse produced "Shape Up Or Ship Out" was recorded at Solar Audio between March and September of 1979 and released the following year. Lake, Torreson and Moore all played on the album. Two songs "Believe Me Lady" and "See The Sun" that were on the first album were re-recorded for this album. Again, all songs were band originals. The band toured Quebec, Ontario and the Atlantic Provinces several times
before they broke up in 1982.

Barkhouse relocated to Toronto for several years before returning to Halifax in the mid 90's and reunited with Lake to form Barkhouse, Lake and Cook.

Formed in 1962 as the Jaybirds and later as Ivan Jay and the Jaymen, Alvin Lee and Leo Lyons re-christened them as Ten Years After to honour Elvis Presley’s 10th year as a pop icon in 1966.  Mostly active between 1968 and 1973, they hit it big with I’m Goin’ Home at Woodstock. This album, Alvin Lee & Company, was released on Derem after they left for Columbia. It consists of earlier material. Crossroads was probably recorded May 14, 1968 by Rob Baker at Klooks Kleek, Railway Hotel, West Hampstead, London for their second LP “Undead” but didn’t make the album.

Giuseppe Di Stefano (b. Catania Sicily, 24 July 1921 – 3 March 2008 Santa Maria Hoè, Italy)
He was an Italian operatic tenor who sang professionally from the mid 1940s until the early 1990s.
He was also known for his long-term performance and recording association with the soprano Maria Callas.

Luciano Pavarotti said he modeled himself after Di Stefano. In an interview Pavarotti said "Di Stefano is my idol. There is a solar voice...It was the most incredible, open voice you could hear. The musicality of di Stefano is as natural and beautiful as the voice is phenomenal"

In November 2004, Di Stefano was critically injured after a brutal beating by unknown assailants. He was ambushed in his car with his wife, Monika Curth, as they prepared to drive from their villa in Diani, a coastal resort near Mombasa on the Indian Ocean. After a couple of operations they moved back to Italy where he died in 2008.

Lawrence Eugene "Larry" Williams (b. New Orleans LA, May 10, 1935 – d. January 7, 1980 in Los Angeles). The song mentions putting a thumb tack on the teacher’s chair – Paul Lyon did that to Jamie Robbie Robertson who sat in front of him.

Friday's show, Frank's Bandstand, was hosted by local CHNS radio personality Frank Cameron, broadcast from Halifax and included Nova Scotia's finest artists.

A lot of great musicians came through Frank's Bandstand, the Halifax version of CBC TV’s daily pan-Canadian show “Music Hop” which originated from Vancouver on Mondays, Montreal (Tuesday), Winnipeg (Wednesday), Toronto (Thursday) and Halifax (Friday). Anne Murray did it for a season.

The Halifax Music Hop house band, the Offbeats, was directed by guitarist Brian Ahern, who would go on to marry Emmylou Harris and produce her early breakthrough recordings. Saxophone player Keith Jollimore later played with Lighthouse and guested on albums by Crowbar, April Wine and the Cooper Brothers.

Rick & The Romans, who had been playing on the Newfoundland music scene for some time, decided that it was time to make a record. The problem was that they were low on financial resources. So what they did was pack up their van and head to Ontario where they found jobs picking tobacco, eventually arriving at Arc Records Studio where they realized they only had enough money for two hours of recording time. They only managed to get these two songs down on tape before time ran out.

Ronald Michael Kohanchuk b East Selkirk MB July 20, 1943 – d. April 3 2002

After high school, Ron worked for his brother Wally Budy at the Texaco station in Selkirk. Ron eventually opened his own business, which was well known as Rons Carburetor. There was nothing he enjoyed more than playing in the Common People Band with Ken Kublanski, which he was able to do right up until mid-February 2002. Died of cancer. Mala Mala Pee Yaka means “Poor little pea”.

Mike Oberle recorded and toured around the Ontario bar circuit with Ian Thomas for many years and become leader and manager of The Lulu's Roadhouse House Band in Kitchener.

This Bavarian band got it’s name from a Herb Alpert, Jerry Moss song that appeared on The Tijuana Brass album “The Lonely Bull” in 1962.

Hubert Deuringer was a German accordionist, arranger, bandleader and music teacher, born 18 January 1924 and died 16 June 2014 in Empfingen, Germany. He conducted the SWF Radio Orchestra and was a lecturer for accordion stylistics and improvisation at the Hohner Conservatory in Trossingen. In 1964, he received the Hermann Schittenhelm Medal for his contributions to folk music

The first line-up of Renaissance was composed of former members of The Yardbirds, Keith Relf and Jim McCarty and produced by ex-Yardbird Paul Samwell-Smith. This came about after the break up of The Yardbirds in 1968. At that time Jimmy Page put together a band called The New Yardbirds which then became Led Zepplin.

Was in Yukon band Two Rivers with Manfred Janssen in the seventies. Now an architect in Yukon. Jim and his friend Manfred Janssen wrote Land of Gold, a song that is recognized today as the unofficial Yukon anthem. In the 80s he took time off from being a performer and only got back into it in 2011. Recently began performing with Teresa Doyle.

Big Bad John won Dean the 1962 Grammy Award for Best Country & Western Recording.
Country pianist Floyd Cramer, who was hired to play piano on the song, came up with the idea to use a hammer and a piece of steel instead. This became a distinctive characteristic of the recording.
Country Yossi, an Orthodox Jewish composer and singer, parodied "Big Bad John" as "Big Bad Moish"
The song's title has also been the target of many jokes, in reference to toilets.

The name Whisky Hollow is taken from a real place. Historically it was a section of Brantford, Ontario Canada that existed in the late 1800’s and was home to distilleries and considered the rough part of town. The band has been performing and recording since the mid-1970s. This was their first LP.

Features Crazy World of Arthur Brown on lead vocals. Not too sure exactly who played on which tracks.
Parsons, who had worked for EMI as a sound engineer in the late 1960s at Abby Road Studios, was involved with the production of the Beatles' Abbey Road and Let It Be albums, as well as Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon
