Produced by Stew Clayton - 1987
Recorded dby Chris Brett at Sunshine Sound Studios, Winnipeg

Stew grew up listening to Wilf Carter sing over the radio from his daddy’s farm in rural Manitoba and decided right then and there that he wanted to write songs and sing like his hero. Clayton remembers a day when he was 18, when the $9.95 Lone Ranger guitar – the first guitar he’d own – arrived in the mail from Eaton’s. He’d eventually become known as the “Canadian Balladeer,” composing over 300 songs about Canadian life.

His wife, Marge, passed away in 2000.

Live at the Bunkhouse: International Records New York STB-2333

b. 11 March 1942 Redhill, Surrey UK

Wiffen’s father was offered a job in Canada and moved his family there in 1958, just as David was beginning his musical career in skiffle bands. He hitchhiked out to Edmonton in early 1964 before basing himself in Calgary, where he managed the Depression folk club for a while. It was there that he met future 3's a Crowd collaborators, Donna Warner and Brent Titcomb. In Vancouver a year later he recorded his first LP of mostly cover songs, but Slice of Life, his first original song to appear on vinyl, was the highlight of the album. In August 1966 made his solo debut at the Mariposa Folk Festival. After this he moved to Ottawa and got involved with The Children before hooking up with Warner and Titcomb to form 3’s A Crowd.

His songs have been covered by the likes of Rumer, the Cowboy Junkies, the Black Crows, the Jayhawks, Roger McGuinn, Harry Belafonte, Tom Rush, Ian and Sylvia Tyson and Jerry Jeff Walker.
