And Now The Particulars

Hour One

1.   George Martin Orchestra: Intro to Help  (arr Ken Thorne)
Help! Soundtrack: Capitol Records of Canada – MAS-2386
London UK
George Martin Orchestra
Produced by George Martin & Dave Dexter Jr – 1965
Recorded by Norman Smith at Abby Road Studios, London

Released 16 Aug 1965

2.   George Martin Orchestra: The Chase  (Ken Thorne)
Help! Soundtrack: Capitol Records of Canada – MAS-2386
London UK
George Martin Orchestra
Produced by George Martin & Dave Dexter Jr – 1965
Recorded by Norman Smith at Abby Road Studios, London

The N American Help! LP featured 7 new Beatles songs from the film + 5 instrumentals from the movie performed by an orchestra put together by G Martin, all but one featuring a sitar. The UK version had the 7 new songs along with 7 that appeard on 3 different LPs in N America.

In Help’s restaurant scene, a sitar was used as a prop and George was immediately drawn to it.

3.   The Beatles: Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown) (John Lennon / Paul McCartney)
Rubber Soul: Capitol Records Canada – T-2442
Liverpool UK
John Lennon – double-tracked vocal, acoustic guitar
Paul McCartney – bass guitar, harmony vocal
George Harrison – 12-string acoustic guitar, double-tracked sitar
Ringo Starr – tambourine, maracas, bass drum, finger cymbals
Produced by George Martin – 1965
Recorded by Norman Smith, October 1965

On 25 August 1965, during the Beatles' American tour, Harrison's friend David Crosby of The Byrds discussed in detail about Indian classical music, and the work of sitar maestro Ravi Shankar.

David Crosby on twitter:  ?@thedavidcrosby
Yes ..according to George I turned him on to Ravi and Indian music

Harrison became enamoured with Shankar's recordings and purchased his first sitar, soon immersing himself in learning how to play the instrument. Norwegian Wood is therefore the first popular recording featuring a sitar.

4.   The Yardbirds: Heart Full Of Soul (Graham Gouldman)
The Hits of the Yardbirds: Capitol Records Canada – T-6229
London UK
Jeff Beck: fuzz guitar
Keith Relf: acoustic guitar, vocals
Chris Dreja – rhythm guitar

Jim McCarty – drums, backing vocals
Ron Prentice – bass
Produced by Giorgio Gomelsky & Paul Samwell-Smith – 1965
Recorded by Giorgio Gomelsky - April 20, 1965 Advision Studios, London

Likely the first Sitar influenced Pop Song – Yardbirds hired a classical sitarist to play on the record but he just couldn’t get it right. Also, there were problems recording the sitar so it was dropped. Jeff Beck used a fuzz tone to imitate the sound of the sitar.

Kinkdom: Reprise Records – 6184
London UK
Ray Davies: guitar, vocal
Dave Davies: lead guitar
Mick Avory: drums

According to Ray Davies, this song is about the loss of his sister, who lived for a time in Ontario, Canada. Upon her return to England she developed a sickness and died while dancing at a night club. Just before she died she gave Ray his first guitar for his 13th birthday. Inspiration for the song came after a stopover in Bombay, where, finding himself jetlagged on a beach, Davies encountered two fishermen chanting on their way to their morning work. "I remember getting up, going to the beach and seeing all these fishermen coming along," said Davies. "I heard chanting to start with, and gradually the chanting came a bit closer and I could see it was fishermen carrying their nets out."
